This year marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and South Korea, and Iwaya plans to engage in discussions with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul on various exchange projects and initiatives.

“If a trip to South Korea materializes, I would like to engage in close intergovernmental communication,” Iwaya stated at a press conference on Tuesday.

In the Philippines, where territorial disputes with China persist, Iwaya intends to reaffirm the strength of bilateral cooperation, focusing on Japan’s official security assistance framework to provide defense equipment to like-minded countries. This will further solidify Japan’s role in supporting the Philippines in its regional security concerns.

The visit underscores Japan’s strategic foreign policy approach to deepen ties with its Asian neighbors amid ongoing regional challenges.
