Tehran, Iran – Iran faced a deadly wave of Israeli strikes on Saturday, including attacks on a gas refinery and a key airport, leaving at least 90 people dead across several provinces. As night fell, the government vowed a “destructive” retaliation within hours.
Explosions lit up the night sky in Tehran, with video footage from state-affiliated media outlets Tasnim and Press TV showing apparent interceptions by Iranian air defense systems.
Airport and refineries hit in major assault
The first strike came early Saturday morning, targeting Mehraba International Airport in Tehran.
Though Iranian authorities reported no major structural damage, the attack prompted the suspension of all flights nationwide until further notice.
Another critical hit occurred in the South Pars gas field, one of the world’s largest and jointly operated with Qatar.
Drones reportedly struck Phase 14 of the facility, sparking a fire and halting production operations.
The bombardments reached at least seven of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to local reports.
Civilian toll rises in worst single attack
The deadliest strike occurred in the capital, where a residential building was hit, killing 60 people, 29 of them children. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei condemned the attack as “atrocious.
Elsewhere, 31 people were killed and 55 injured in the northwestern province of East Azerbaijan following morning bombardments.
In total, Iranian authorities have confirmed at least 90 fatalities nationwide so far, as search-and-rescue efforts continue in heavily hit areas.
Iran vows swift and forceful response
Iran’s state television warned that “hard and destructive” strikes on Israel were imminent. “Our response will be proportionate and unavoidable,” said a defense official who spoke anonymously to local media.
The Israeli campaign, which began in the early hours of Friday, has included a mix of drone and missile attacks on Iranian infrastructure, targeting military, nuclear, and civilian facilities. Among the confirmed targets are the uranium enrichment sites of Fordow and Natanz, as well as multiple military bases and airports.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, speaking on the social network X just moments after the aviation attack on Iran’s capital, said: “Tehran is burning”.
