New York, USA – External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar hosted a meeting of BRICS Foreign Ministers in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly and outlined India’s priorities as it prepares to assume the group’s chairship in 2025.
In a series of posts on X, Dr. Jaishankar highlighted the importance of BRICS as a stabilizing force in global affairs. “When multilateralism is under stress, BRICS has stood firm as a strong voice of reason and constructive change,” he wrote, stressing that in today’s turbulent world, the bloc must “reinforce the message of peacebuilding, dialogue, diplomacy and adherence to international law.”

Calling for institutional reforms, the External Affairs Minister said BRICS must “amplify its collective call for a comprehensive reform of the principal organs of the United Nations, especially the UN Security Council,” reflecting long-standing concerns among member states about the need for more representative and equitable global governance.
On the economic front, Jaishankar pointed to rising protectionism, tariff volatility, and non-tariff barriers that are disrupting global trade flows, insisting that BRICS must “defend the multilateral trading system.” He also emphasized that technology and innovation will shape the next phase of BRICS cooperation, with a focus on startups, digital transformation, and knowledge partnerships.
Outlining India’s agenda under its upcoming chairship, Jaishankar said New Delhi would prioritize food and energy security, climate change, and sustainable development, while simultaneously strengthening development partnerships and fostering innovation-driven growth.
The meeting in New York brought together foreign ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, at a time when the bloc is seeking to expand its role as a counterweight in global political and economic affairs.
