New Delhi, India – The Delhi government has rolled out an extensive campaign aimed at curbing air pollution and enhancing air quality across the national capital. Spearheaded by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the initiative focuses on transforming Delhi into a cleaner and healthier city through targeted measures such as making the entire Ring Road dust-free, planting trees along roads and dividers, and alleviating traffic congestion.

CM Rekha Gupta, in a statement released on March 16, 2025, emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing Delhi’s long-standing air pollution crisis. “Making Delhi clean and pollution-free is the top priority of our government,” she declared during a high-level meeting with concerned departments. Following a thorough review of potential solutions, Gupta directed all relevant agencies to take immediate and effective action to tackle the city’s air quality challenges.
Key components of the campaign include the deployment of mechanized sweeping and water sprinkling along the Ring Road to minimize dust, a major contributor to particulate matter in the air. Additionally, the government has initiated a large-scale tree plantation drive along roads, central verges, and dividers, aiming to increase green cover and act as a natural barrier against pollutants. To address traffic congestion—a significant source of vehicular emissions—the campaign incorporates an intelligent traffic management system targeting 250 major congestion points across the city.
The Delhi government is also collaborating with the central government, various agencies, and the public to ensure the success of these pollution control measures. A 24-hour air quality monitoring system has been established to provide real-time data and enable swift responses to rising pollution levels. Furthermore, the campaign promotes the use of public transport and electric vehicles to reduce emissions, alongside stricter enforcement of dust control norms at construction sites.
This initiative comes in the wake of recent reports highlighting Delhi’s severe air quality issues, with the city recording an average PM2.5 level of 159 μg/m³ during the winter of 2024-25, making it the most polluted city in India, according to a Business Standard report. The campaign aligns with the government’s broader year-round plan to combat air and water pollution, as outlined by CM Gupta in February 2025.
While the measures have been welcomed by environmentalists, the success of the campaign will depend on consistent implementation, inter-agency coordination, and public participation. The Delhi government has urged residents to support the initiative by adhering to traffic rules, using public transport, and avoiding activities that contribute to pollution.
