Trump and Xi to Meet in South Korea as Trade Talks Continue

Washington, US – U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to meet on October 30 in Gyeongju, South Korea, the White House announced Thursday, signaling a significant moment in ongoing U.S.-China relations.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, “Thursday morning, local time, President Trump will participate in a bilateral meeting with President Xi of the People’s Republic of China before departing to return home to Washington, DC, on Thursday night.” The meeting will take place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders’ summit, marking the conclusion of Trump’s week-long Asian tour.

President Trump’s itinerary includes visits to Malaysia, Japan, and finally South Korea, highlighting his focus on strengthening U.S. ties across the Asia-Pacific region while simultaneously addressing strategic and economic challenges posed by China.

This summit will be the first face-to-face meeting between Trump and Xi since Trump returned to office in January, and the first overall since their last encounter at the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, in 2019. Analysts say the meeting is likely to focus heavily on trade negotiations, technology, and regional security issues, given the ongoing tensions between the two global powers.

The meeting comes amid ongoing trade negotiations following a series of U.S.-imposed tariffs on Chinese goods, which Beijing responded to with its own countermeasures. During a September 18 phone call, Trump and Xi reportedly approved a preliminary agreement to allow TikTok to continue operating in the United States, and also confirmed plans to meet at the end of October during the APEC summit.

Tensions briefly flared earlier this month when Trump questioned the need for a meeting after China announced new export restrictions on rare earths. However, the White House later clarified that the summit would proceed as planned, reflecting the strategic importance both countries place on dialogue despite disagreements.

Observers note that the meeting could also have broader implications for regional stability, economic cooperation, and global supply chains, as both leaders are under pressure to deliver tangible results from ongoing negotiations. The summit comes at a time when the U.S. seeks to strengthen its presence in the Asia-Pacific region while balancing a complex relationship with China.

As both leaders prepare to meet in South Korea, the global community will be watching closely for any announcements or agreements that could shape the future of U.S.-China relations, trade policies, and technological partnerships.
