Washington, USA – U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday sharply criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin following a wave of deadly airstrikes on Kyiv, calling the attacks “unacceptable” and signaling that new sanctions against Moscow could be on the table.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with him. What the hell happened to him? He’s killing a lot of people. I’m not happy about that,” Trump told reporters at Morristown Airport in New Jersey, ahead of his return to Washington.

The coordinated Russian assault—one of the most intense in weeks—killed at least 12 people and left 79 wounded, as hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles rained down on the Ukrainian capital. The strikes came on the final day of a 1,000-prisoner exchange agreement brokered last week in Istanbul.
Trump, who has taken an active role in efforts to mediate between Moscow and Kyiv since returning to office in January, said he was weighing punitive measures.
“I’ve always gotten along with him,” Trump said of Putin, “but he’s sending rockets into cities and killing people, and I don’t like it at all.”
The president has previously warned that continued Russian aggression could trigger renewed U.S. sanctions, especially if the Kremlin fails to show a willingness to engage in ceasefire negotiations.
In response to the weekend’s violence, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the international community—particularly the United States and European allies—to ramp up pressure on Russia.
“We need action, not just words,” Zelenskyy said in a statement Sunday evening, calling the latest attacks “a brutal violation of international norms and a direct threat to peace in Europe.”
