Trump Expresses Strong Confidence in Mamdani Following Meeting

Washington, USA — U.S. President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani described their Friday meeting at the White House as “very productive,” marking a notable shift in tone after a heated election season defined by sharp personal attacks and clashing ideologies.

Following their closed-door meeting, the two leaders held a joint press conference in the Oval Office. Trump remained seated at the Resolute Desk while Mamdani stood beside him — a visual contrast softened by an unexpectedly cordial exchange.

“I feel very confident that he can do a good job,” Trump said, praising the discussion and assuring New Yorkers that they will “hopefully have an excellent mayor.” He added that he is willing to help Mamdani “make everybody’s dream come true.”

The comments represent a dramatic shift from Trump’s campaign-trail rhetoric, during which he repeatedly labeled Mamdani a “communist.” On Friday, however, Trump said the mayor-elect “is going to surprise some conservative people actually.”

Mamdani, who takes office on January 1, 2026, echoed the positive tone, saying the conversation focused on policy solutions for New Yorkers rather than political differences. “We both have clear positions,” he said, emphasizing that the meeting was centered on serving the city’s residents.

The change in tone follows a tense election in which Mamdani called Trump a “despot,” while Trump warned that New Yorkers might flee to Florida under what he described as a potential “communist regime.”

During the press Q&A, Mamdani said the pair discussed the possibility of deploying Border Patrol resources in New York City. Trump added that both leaders shared a desire for a city “free of crime.”

Mamdani’s victory in the Nov. 4, 2025 municipal elections was historic. He won approximately 50.6% of the vote, defeating Andrew Cuomo, who earned 41.2%, and Curtis Sliwa, who received 7.4%.

At just 34 years old, Mamdani becomes one of the youngest mayors in modern city history — and New York’s first Muslim mayor.
