Beijing, China – China has issued a strong warning to the United States, declaring its readiness for any type of war, including tariff and trade conflicts, following a fresh round of U.S. tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, condemned the latest U.S. tariffs, stating that such actions will not resolve Washington’s concerns over issues like fentanyl. “If the U.S. truly wants to solve the fentanyl issue, the right approach is to engage with China on the basis of equality, mutual respect, and mutual benefit,” Lin said during a late-night press conference on Tuesday.

Lin further escalated the rhetoric, warning, “If the U.S. has other agendas in mind, and if war is what the U.S. wants—be it a tariff war, a trade war, or any other type of war—we’re ready to fight till the end.”
The remarks came just hours after the Trump administration imposed new tariffs, including 25% duties on goods from Mexico and Canada, and 10% tariffs on imports from China. These latest levies have doubled an earlier round of tariffs on Chinese goods imposed last month.
In swift retaliation, China unveiled countermeasures within minutes of the new tariffs taking effect. Beijing announced additional 10% to 15% tariffs on U.S. imports, including chicken, wheat, soybeans, and beef.
Meanwhile, China has also taken legal action, filing a revised request for consultations at the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the latest U.S. tariffs. Beijing initially challenged Washington’s 10% tariffs on February 4, and with the new round of duties, the total levies on Chinese goods have now reached 20%.
While the Trump administration has not directly responded to China’s latest warnings, tensions between the two superpowers continue to rise, fueled by disputes over technology restrictions, trade imbalances, and geopolitical influence.
Dr. Li Mei, a geopolitics expert at Peking University, said China’s firm stance is about “drawing a clear line” in the escalating trade war. “This is not just about tariffs—it’s a strategic message to Washington and the international community that China will not be pressured into submission,” she said.
As global markets react to the intensifying trade war, the key question remains: Will this escalating war of words lead to deeper economic confrontation, or is it another chapter in the ongoing U.S.-China standoff?
