Chinese President Xi Meets Portuguese Prime Minister in Beijing

Beijing, China Chinese President Xi Jinping met Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro in Beijing on Tuesday, marking a key moment in bilateral ties as the two countries celebrate the 20th anniversary of their comprehensive strategic partnership.

Xi highlighted the shared history and cultural traditions of China and Portugal, noting that the two nations had “appropriately resolved” the Macao issue through friendly consultations. He praised recent achievements in bilateral cooperation, describing them as a model of mutual respect and mutual benefit between countries with different social systems and national conditions.

The Chinese leader called for strengthening strategic communication, expanding cooperation in innovation, green development, maritime affairs, and healthcare, and promoting cultural and educational exchanges. Xi also underscored Macao’s role as a bridge between China and Portuguese-speaking countries and urged both sides to leverage forums such as the China-Portuguese-speaking Countries Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum to achieve higher-level outcomes.

Amid global uncertainties, Xi stressed the importance of China and Europe working together to enhance communication and deepen cooperation. He expressed hope that Portugal would continue to support the broader China-EU partnership. Xi also reaffirmed China’s readiness to cooperate with Portugal in multilateral affairs, safeguard the authority of the UN, defend free trade, and promote a fairer global governance system.

Prime Minister Montenegro, delivering greetings from Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, reaffirmed Portugal’s commitment to the one-China policy. He emphasized that Macao’s successful governance over the past 25 years demonstrated the correctness of Portugal’s decision, adding that China’s support during Portugal’s past economic hardships would not be forgotten.

Montenegro expressed Portugal’s willingness to deepen political trust, strengthen trade ties, and expand cooperation with China. He welcomed Beijing’s contributions to global governance and said Portugal is ready to play a constructive role in promoting healthy and stable EU-China relations.
