Zelenskyy and Vance at MSC2025: Ukraine Demands ‘Security Guarantees’ as Trump Pushes for End to Ukraine-Russia Conflict

Munich, Germany — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared on Friday at the Munich Security Conference that Ukraine will not enter peace talks with Russia until it secures “security guarantees” from Western allies, including the United States. Zelenskyy made the statement during a meeting with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, marking a critical moment in ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the Ukraine-Russia war.

Before his meeting with Vance, Zelenskyy emphasized that he would only meet in person with Russian President Vladimir Putin after a negotiated plan is agreed upon with U.S. President Donald Trump. The Ukrainian president’s remarks came as part of a broader conversation at the conference about the future of global security and the path to peace in Ukraine.

In his address, Vice President Vance delivered a blunt message to European officials, warning that the real threat to Europe may not come from Russia or China, but from internal challenges. “The threat that I worry the most about vis-à-vis Europe is not Russia. It’s not China. It’s not any other external actor,” Vance said. “What I worry about is the threat from within — the retreat of Europe from some of its most fundamental values, values shared with the United States of America.” He further cautioned European leaders, “If you’re running in fear of your own voters, there’s nothing America can do for you.”

Vance’s remarks came amidst mounting concerns over the shifting dynamics of U.S. foreign policy under the Trump administration, particularly in regard to Ukraine. The Vice President touched on the three-year-old war in Ukraine but focused primarily on broader issues affecting Europe, such as free speech and migration. He criticized the European approach to illegal migration, highlighting a recent attack in Munich by a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker.

Earlier in the day, Vance met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, reiterating the U.S. administration’s call for NATO members to meet defense spending targets. Currently, only 23 of NATO’s 32 members are reaching the alliance’s 2% of GDP target for defense spending.

Meanwhile, hours before the meeting between Zelenskyy and Vance, a Russian drone strike targeted the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, landing a high-explosive warhead near its protective shell. Fortunately, no increase in radiation levels was reported, but Zelenskyy labeled the attack a “clear greeting from Putin” to the security conference. Russian officials denied Ukraine’s claims, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov calling the accusations unfounded.

The backdrop of these talks was the increasingly uncertain position of Ukraine’s future in NATO, as Trump has voiced skepticism about both Ukraine joining the alliance and its ability to regain territories lost to Russia. Trump’s comments earlier in the week suggested that a peace deal would likely require Ukraine to cede certain territories, including Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.

“The Ukraine war has to end,” Trump told reporters Thursday, calling the conflict “ridiculous” and lamenting the death toll. His position has left many Europeans grappling with how to maintain NATO’s post-WWII security framework and whether the U.S. will continue to provide significant military and economic aid to Ukraine. Zelenskyy, while acknowledging the challenges, expressed belief that Trump holds the key to a peaceful resolution.

As the peace talks continue to evolve, Trump’s stance has further complicated matters. He has been vague about his specific intentions, though it’s clear that he sees the end of the war as a priority. Zelenskyy, however, remains firm in his belief that a negotiated settlement will require both Trump and U.S. leadership, stating that the U.S. president even gave him his personal phone number.

In a striking interview with the Wall Street Journal, Vance hinted at the possibility of sanctions or even military action if Russia refuses to negotiate a peace deal that guarantees Ukraine’s sovereignty. This marks a departure from the more restrained tone typically associated with the Trump administration, which has generally sought to avoid military escalation while pushing for a swift resolution.

The situation in Europe is rapidly evolving, as French Deputy Foreign Minister Benjamin Haddad warned that Europe must reconsider its reliance on the U.S. for security, especially in the face of a potential Russian victory in Ukraine. Haddad stressed that a Russian victory could have global repercussions, particularly in Asia.

As the conference unfolds, all eyes remain on Vance’s next steps and whether the Trump administration will clarify its strategy for Ukraine, NATO, and global security. With Europe’s future security on the line, the coming months could mark a decisive turning point in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

Trump Hosts Modi at the White House, Pledges Stronger U.S.-India Trade, but Warns of Higher Tariffs

Washington, USA President Donald Trump welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the White House on Thursday with a bear hug, calling him “a great friend of mine.” Despite the warm reception, Trump issued a stark warning that India would not be exempt from the higher tariffs he has started imposing on U.S. trade partners around the world.

In a joint news conference, Trump, who had previously referred to India as the “tariff king,” criticized India’s import levies as “very unfair and strong.” He declared, “Whatever India charges, we charge them,” suggesting that India’s tariff rates no longer held significant weight in U.S. trade policy.

Trump, who has focused on reducing the U.S. trade deficit, particularly with countries like China and the European Union, reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring fairness in trade relations with India. He suggested that boosting U.S. energy exports to India could help narrow the $50 billion trade deficit, with U.S. exports to India totaling about $70 billion in 2023, while imports were valued at $120 billion. He also emphasized that both countries were working on a major trade deal that could be concluded later this year.

Modi, ever diplomatic, showered praise on Trump, borrowing from the president’s “Make America Great Again” slogan, saying he was determined to “Make India Great Again” or “MIGA.” The two leaders also discussed military cooperation, with Trump confirming that the U.S. would increase its military sales to India by “many millions of dollars,” including the long-awaited F-35 stealth fighter planes.

A key moment during the conference was Trump’s commitment to extraditing one of the 2008 Mumbai attacks’ plotters. He mentioned the case of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, who was convicted in the U.S. for planning the attack on a Danish newspaper. Trump stated, “He’s going to be going back to India to face justice,” adding that this could be the first of many such extraditions.

Before Modi’s arrival, Trump signed an order to increase tariffs to match the import tax rates that other nations impose, a move that impacts countries globally, including India. Despite these tariff concerns, India has expressed willingness to lower some of its own levies, such as on Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and had already reduced retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods like almonds, apples, and chickpeas.

In a show of unity, Modi responded to Trump’s focus on tariffs, acknowledging India’s stance of peace despite external perceptions of neutrality, particularly in relation to the ongoing war in Ukraine. “India has a side, and that side is of peace,” Modi said, appreciating Trump’s diplomatic engagement with Russia and Ukraine’s leaders earlier in the week.

Trump also used the meeting to highlight his broader economic strategy, noting that he was committed to eliminating U.S. trade deficits with all countries, following similar discussions with leaders from Japan and Israel.

The two leaders touched on other pressing issues, including immigration. Modi confirmed that India would accept the return of illegal Indian immigrants in the U.S., in line with Trump’s hardline stance on immigration. With over 725,000 undocumented Indian immigrants in the U.S., Modi expressed India’s preparedness to take back any verified Indian nationals. Trump reiterated his plan for “mass deportations,” with a specific focus on the rising number of Indian nationals attempting to enter the U.S. through the U.S.-Canada border.

Modi’s visit marks the fourth foreign leader to meet with Trump since his inauguration last month, following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Japan’s Shigeru Ishiba, and Jordan’s King Abdullah II. Before the White House meeting, Modi had also met with national security adviser Mike Waltz and Tesla founder Elon Musk.

The visit underlined the complexities of U.S.-India relations, balancing trade, military cooperation, and immigration concerns, all while Trump maintains his tough stance on global tariffs.

Explosion in Pakistan’s Balochistan kills 11 coal miners, injures 7, with 2 in critical condition

0

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN – An explosion targeting a vehicle carrying coal miners in southwestern Pakistan killed at least 11 people and injured six others, authorities said Friday.

The blast, caused by an improvised explosive device, occurred in the Harnai district of Balochistan, a region long plagued by violence.

“A roadside bomb was planted and detonated as the miners’ vehicle passed by,” a local official said.

RELATED NEWS : Suicide attack on bus in southern Pakistan kills 3, injures 6

Security forces arrived at the scene, cordoning off the area after transporting the victims to medical facilities, Geo News reported. Some of the wounded were in critical condition, and arrangements were being made to transfer them to Quetta for treatment.

The explosion is the latest in a series of bombings in the Shahrag area, home to several coal mines. However, officials described the casualties from this attack as the highest in recent incidents.

The provincial mining authority said most of the miners killed and injured in the attack were from Swat and Shangla districts. No group has claimed responsibility for the bombing. The official, who declined to be identified, added that it may have been a remote-operated device.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. But the proscribed terrorist group Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) has carried out similar attacks in the past to target migrant workers from other parts of the country.

The region’s deputy commissioner, Hazrat Wali Agha, said 17 miners were in the truck when the bomb went off.

A doctor at the local hospital said two of the wounded are in critical condition.

Mineral-rich Balochistan, which borders Iran and Afghanistan, has been the scene of a decade-old insurgency by separatist ethnic Baloch groups. Other terrorist groups are also operating in the area.

Indian PM Modi presents a tariff ‘offer’ during talks with Trump

Washington, USA – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to bring a “gift” for U.S. President Donald Trump during their meeting on Thursday, as he seeks to secure tariff concessions, new business deals, and closer cooperation on China. Modi hopes these gestures will strengthen ties and win favor with the U.S. president.

Trump, who is still within his first month in office, has used the threat of tariffs as leverage to extract new trade agreements, investments, and law enforcement assistance, targeting both allies and adversaries. Although Modi and Trump shared a cordial relationship during the former president’s first term, Trump has criticized India’s trade practices, famously calling the country a “very big abuser.” Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum have hit India particularly hard, raising expectations for a tough negotiation.

RELATED NEWS : PM Modi and President Macron Address 14th India-France CEOs Forum in Paris

Ahead of Thursday’s White House talks, Modi has prepared several offers, including increased purchases of liquefied natural gas, combat vehicles, and jet engines, according to unnamed Indian government officials. There are also potential agreements on U.S. agriculture exports to India and investment in nuclear energy. Modi’s delegation is exploring tariff reductions in various sectors, including electronics, medical equipment, and chemicals. Trump’s team believes these sectors need improvement from India.

“It’s a ‘gift’ for Trump,” said one source close to the discussions, previewing the private meeting. U.S. and Indian officials are also advancing talks on a bilateral trade deal, with hopes of reaching an agreement later this year. A senior Trump administration official outlined plans for a stronger defense partnership, including procurement and joint defense exercises. “On energy, we have the ability to literally power the Indian economy with U.S. energy sales, and the president believes both of those things can bring down the trade deficit.”

One sensitive issue that could surface is the case of billionaire Gautam Adani, whose company is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice for an alleged bribery scheme. Adani has denied any wrongdoing. Another potential complication is an alleged Indian intelligence plot to assassinate a Sikh activist in the U.S. during the previous administration. However, a U.S. official emphasized that President Trump prioritizes the safety of every American.

The tariff issue, however, is expected to take center stage. Richard Rossow, head of the India program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, predicts a challenging conversation. “It’s going to be a boxing match,” he said. “India is willing to take a few hits, but there’s a limit.” The U.S. currently faces a $45.6 billion trade deficit with India, and U.S. tariffs remain lower, with an average rate of 2.2%, compared to India’s 12%. Trump’s administration has made it clear that it will impose reciprocal tariffs on countries that impose duties on U.S. imports, escalating fears of a global trade conflict.

What Trump Wants

In addition to trade and defense matters, Trump is expected to seek more cooperation from India on addressing unauthorized immigration. India is a major source of both legal and illegal immigration to the U.S., particularly among tech workers on visas. The issue is a key concern for the Trump administration.

Modi is also expected to meet with billionaire Elon Musk during his Washington visit, according to two sources familiar with the plans. Musk, a prominent Trump ally, may discuss the potential for his Starlink company to enter the South Asian market.

India’s strategic position in the U.S. efforts to counter China is another key area of discussion. Many in the Trump administration view China as the primary U.S. rival. Modi shares concerns about China’s military expansion and competition in global markets. There is also fear within India that Trump might negotiate with China in a way that excludes India, according to Mukesh Aghi, president of the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum.

Despite the focus on bilateral relations, trade, defense, and immigration, the issue of China will likely be an underlying theme throughout the meeting, according to Lisa Curtis, a former White House official. “Even though much of the talk will be on the bilateral relationship, on trade, on immigration, defense purchases, the China thread will weave through the meeting,” she said.

While India has maintained its stance of “strategic ambiguity” in international conflicts, it continues its close ties with Russia, despite the ongoing war in Ukraine. India remains a significant consumer of Russian energy, even as Western nations reduce their consumption due to the conflict.

As Modi prepares for this high-stakes meeting, all eyes will be on how these complex issues—tariffs, defense, energy, and China—will shape the future of U.S.-India relations.

Russia releases imprisoned American Marc Fogel in what US calls a step toward the end of Ukraine war

Washington, USA — Marc Fogel, an American history teacher who was deemed wrongfully detained by Russia, has been released and returned to the U.S. in what the White House described as a diplomatic thaw that could advance negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

Steve Witkoff, a special envoy for President Donald Trump, left Russia with Fogel and brought him to the White House, where Trump greeted him.

RELATED NEWS : Latest – All Passengers Feared Dead After American Eagle Plane and Army Helicopter Collide in Washington, D.C.

“I feel like the luckiest man on Earth right now,” Fogel said as he stood next to Trump with an American flag draped around his shoulders.

Fogel, who is from Pennsylvania and was expected to be reunited with his family by the end of the day, said he would forever be indebted to Trump.

Trump said another American would be released on Wednesday, though he declined to name the person or say from what country, only saying it was someone “very special.”

The president declined to say if he spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin about Fogel, but Fogel praised the Russian leader as “very generous and statesmanlike in granting me a pardon.”

Asked about the terms of the deal, Trump said: “Very fair, very, very fair, very reasonable. Not like deals you’ve seen over the years. They were very fair.”

He did not say what the United States exchanged for Fogel’s release.

Fogel was arrested in August 2021 and was serving a 14-year prison sentence. His family and supporters said he had been traveling with medically prescribed marijuana, and he was designated by President Joe Biden’s administration as wrongfully detained in December.

Michael Waltz, Trump’s national security adviser, said the U.S. and Russia “negotiated an exchange” to ensure Fogel’s release. He did not say what the U.S. side of the bargain entailed. Previous negotiations have occasionally involved reciprocal releases of Russians by the U.S. or its allies.

Waltz said the development was “a sign we are moving in the right direction to end the brutal and terrible war in Ukraine.” Trump, a Republican, has promised to find a way to end the conflict.

Trump also has talked about having a good relationship with Putin, who launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Last month, Trump said his administration was having “very serious” conversations with Russia about the war.

Speaking to reporters at the White House earlier Tuesday, Trump said, “We were treated very nicely by Russia, actually. I hope that’s the beginning of a relationship where we can end that war.”

Asked whether the U.S. had given up anything in return, Trump replied “not much” but did not elaborate.

Fogel’s relatives said they were “beyond grateful, relieved and overwhelmed” that he was coming home.

“This has been the darkest and most painful period of our lives, but today, we begin to heal,” they said. “For the first time in years, our family can look forward to the future with hope.”

There was no immediate comment from Moscow about Fogel’s release on Tuesday.

The U.S., Russia and other nations carried out a large prisoner swap in August that resulted in the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and American corporate security executive Paul Whelan, among others.

India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) – comprising Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein – have taken a significant step towards deeper economic collaboration with the inauguration of the India-EFTA Desk. This initiative follows the recently concluded India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), which positions EFTA as the first European bloc to formalize a trade pact with India.

Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, hailed TEPA as a landmark agreement, emphasizing India’s growing role in global trade.

“This desk will serve as the bridge between businesses on both sides, ensuring transparency, trust, and ease of doing business,” he stated. YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia apologizes for inappropriate jokes after Police case

0

A complaint has been filed in Mumbai, Maharashtra, against popular social media personalities Ranveer Allahbadia (‘BeerBiceps’) and Apoorva Mukhija (‘The Rebel Kid’), along with comedian Samay Raina, for allegedly using ‘abusive language’ on the show India’s Got Latent.

Mumbai, India – Popular YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, known for his BeerBiceps podcast, has issued an apology for a controversial joke he made on the comedy show India’s Got Latent. His apology came after a clip from an episode of the show went viral on Monday, sparking backlash.

In a video message posted on social media platform X, Allahbadia admitted his mistake and expressed remorse. “I shouldn’t have said what I said on India’s Got Latent. I’m sorry,” he wrote in the caption.

He further elaborated in the video, saying, “I personally had a lapse in judgment. It wasn’t cool on my part.” Acknowledging his responsibility as a content creator, he stated, “The podcast is watched by people of all ages. I don’t want to be the kind of person that takes that responsibility lightly, and family is the last thing that I would ever disrespect.”

Allahbadia also assured his followers that he has taken corrective action. “I need to use this platform better, that’s been my learning from this whole experience. I promise to just get better. I’ve asked the makers of the video to remove the insensitive sections. All I can say in the end is I’m sorry, and I hope you can forgive me as a human being.”

Political Reactions and Criticism

Social media influencer Jaicky Yadav has publicly raised concerns regarding YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia. Yadav has taken to social media to highlight the issue, drawing attention to certain remarks or actions by Allahbadia that he believes require scrutiny. His statements have sparked widespread discussions among netizens, with many engaging in debates over the matter.

As the controversy unfolds, followers of both influencers are eagerly awaiting further developments and a possible response from Allahbadia. In a post on X, yesterday, Yadav stated that he would file a complaint against Allahbadia if he does not issue a public apology. This declaration has further fueled the ongoing conversation, with many closely watching how the situation will be resolved.

The controversy has drawn political reactions, with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressing the issue. “I have come to know about it. I have not seen it yet. Things have been said and presented in a wrong way. Everyone has freedom of speech, but our freedom ends when we encroach upon the freedom of others. In our society, we have made some rules, and if someone violates them, it is absolutely wrong. Action should be taken against them,” Fadnavis said.

Former National Commission for Women (NCW) Chief and Rajya Sabha MP Rekha Sharma also condemned Allahbadia’s remarks. “The video is very shocking, and I think whether it is a female or a male, this kind of joke is never accepted by society. Making jokes about a mother or a female’s body doesn’t look good, and somewhere it shows how today’s youth has stooped down morally. Such jokes affect others who are engaged in similar creative fields. I have forwarded the video to the NCW Chairperson to take action,” she said.

Allahbadia’s Final Statement /Ranveer Allahbadia Issues Apology

Concluding his apology, Allahbadia reiterated, “My comment was not appropriate, it wasn’t even funny. Comedy is not my forte. I am just here to say sorry.”

He also acknowledged the concerns raised by his audience. “Many of you asked if this is how I wish to use my platform, and obviously, this is not how I wish to use it. I’m not going to give any context, justification, or reasoning behind whatever happened.”

The incident has ignited discussions on the responsibility of public figures and the boundaries of humor in digital content creation. While Allahbadia has taken steps to address the controversy, the debate surrounding the incident continues to unfold.

Trump’s AI Vision and China’s DeepSeek Dominate High-Stakes Paris AI Summit

Paris, France — The geopolitics of artificial intelligence will take center stage at a major summit in France, where world leaders, tech executives, and AI experts will negotiate pledges on guiding the development of this rapidly evolving technology.

As AI governance becomes a global priority, the Paris AI Action Summit marks a crucial moment, especially with the emergence of China’s budget-friendly and powerful DeepSeek chatbot shaking up the industry.

RELATED NEWS : French President Emmanuel Macron announces €100 billion investments in AI

U.S. Vice President JD Vance—making his first international trip since assuming office—will represent the United States at the summit beginning February 10. Meanwhile, China’s President Xi Jinping is dispatching a special envoy, signaling the strategic importance of the meeting.

Global Power Players Convene

Hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the two-day summit brings together a powerhouse lineup, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Tech leaders such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Microsoft President Brad Smith, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai will also be in attendance.

Tesla’s Elon Musk and DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng have been invited, though their participation remains uncertain. The summit’s agenda includes high-level discussions at the Grand Palais, followed by an exclusive dinner at the Élysée Palace for heads of state and industry leaders.

The Stakes: AI at a Crossroads

Generative AI continues to evolve at a staggering pace, revolutionizing industries and daily life. However, concerns about safety, ethical AI use, and regulation loom large.

The previous AI Safety Summit in the UK led to a non-binding pledge from 28 nations to address AI risks. South Korea followed up with an agreement to establish public AI safety institutes. Paris aims to build on these initiatives, broadening the discussion to include more nations and key AI-related topics.

However, unlike previous editions, this summit will not produce any legally binding regulations.

“The summit comes at a time when many nations are positioning themselves in the international AI competition,” Macron told La Provence. “It’s about setting the rules of the game—AI cannot be the Wild West.”

Key Deliverables: Ethical and Open AI

The summit aims to secure commitments for ethical, democratic, and environmentally sustainable AI. Organizers are working on a joint political declaration, though it remains unclear if the U.S. will endorse such measures.

A major highlight is the launch of “Current AI,” a public-interest partnership with an initial $400 million investment. Over the next five years, the initiative aims to raise $2.5 billion to provide open-source access to AI tools and databases for trusted developers.

Macron’s team is pushing for a shift away from raw computing power as the primary driver of AI supremacy. Instead, the focus will be on leveraging AI to address real-world challenges like cancer research and Long COVID solutions.

“We now have a rare opportunity to mitigate AI’s risks while ensuring it improves lives,” said Martin Tisné, the summit’s envoy for public interest AI.

Trump’s AI Push: Deregulation and U.S. Leadership

U.S. President Donald Trump has emphasized his goal of making the U.S. the global AI capital by leveraging energy resources to power AI development. His administration has scrapped former President Joe Biden’s AI guardrails, replacing them with policies aimed at reducing regulations and ensuring AI systems remain free of “ideological bias.”

This approach may put Washington at odds with other summit participants. “Trump opposes global AI governance,” said Nick Reiners, senior geotechnology analyst at Eurasia Group. “Expanding the conversation beyond safety—to include workforce impacts, environmental concerns, and inclusivity—makes a broad agreement much harder.”

China’s Growing AI Influence

Xi Jinping is sending Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing as his special representative, elevating China’s role in AI diplomacy. This is a significant upgrade from the 2023 Bletchley Park summit, where China sent only a vice minister of science and technology.

The surprise success of DeepSeek has escalated the AI rivalry between Beijing and Washington. Trump called DeepSeek’s rise a “wake-up call” for the U.S., while his AI advisor David Sacks accused the Chinese firm of using stolen OpenAI data. DeepSeek now faces scrutiny and bans in some countries over security and privacy concerns.

Yet DeepSeek’s efficiency—achieving cutting-edge AI performance at a fraction of the cost and with fewer chips—aligns with France’s interest in open-source AI. Macron sees an opportunity to promote European AI alternatives like French startup Mistral.

“DeepSeek validates the idea that AI advancement doesn’t require hundreds of billions of dollars in chip investment,” Reiners noted.

U.S.-EU Tensions on AI Regulation

Brussels remains a thorn in the side of U.S. tech giants. The European Union’s aggressive regulation, including multi-billion-dollar antitrust penalties against Google, Apple, and Meta, has sparked Trump’s ire.

Last month, at the World Economic Forum, Trump criticized the EU’s penalties as an “anti-American tax.” More recently, Meta has refused to sign onto the EU’s proposed non-binding AI code of practice, calling it “unworkable.”

With AI regulations tightening across Europe, tensions between the U.S. and the EU could intensify at the summit, adding another layer of complexity to the already high-stakes discussions.

Looking Ahead

As the Paris AI Action Summit unfolds, all eyes will be on whether global leaders can align on AI’s future—or if geopolitical divides will overshadow progress. With the U.S. prioritizing deregulation, China asserting its AI dominance, and Europe pushing for stringent oversight, the road ahead remains uncertain.

Regardless of outcomes, this summit marks another pivotal moment in the AI race—one that will shape the landscape of global AI governance for years to come.

India’s Modi to Meet Trump, Plans Tariff Concessions to Boost U.S. Trade

0

New Delhi, India – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is preparing additional tariff cuts ahead of his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, a move aimed at increasing American exports to India and averting a potential trade war, government officials said.

Modi’s visit to the U.S. on Wednesday and Thursday comes as Trump considers imposing reciprocal tariffs on multiple countries, part of his broader strategy to reshape global trade in favor of the United States. While Trump has not specified which nations will be affected, he has previously criticized India as a “very big abuser” on trade and urged New Delhi to purchase more American-made security equipment to establish a more balanced trade relationship.

India is weighing tariff reductions in at least a dozen sectors, including electronics, medical and surgical equipment, and select chemicals, in an effort to boost U.S. exports. These reductions align with India’s domestic production plans, three government officials said. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted that concessions are being considered on items that India primarily sources from the U.S. or has the potential to increase imports of, such as dish antennas and wood pulp. Modi is expected to discuss these tariff adjustments with Trump next week, with India remaining open to negotiating a possible mini trade deal.

An early agreement aims to prevent a “trade war-like situation similar to what is happening between the U.S. and China,” one official said. Trump recently imposed a sweeping 10% tariff on Chinese imports, prompting Beijing to retaliate with duties on American energy products. The Indian officials declined to be named, as they are not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. India’s trade ministry, foreign affairs ministry, and the Prime Minister’s Office did not respond to requests for comment sent outside official working hours.

The talks on tariff concessions follow India’s recent decision to lower average import tariffs from 13% to 11% on several items in its annual budget, alongside tax cuts on high-end motorcycles and luxury cars. Additionally, India is reviewing surcharges on more than 30 imported goods, including luxury vehicles and solar cells.

The Modi-Trump meeting is expected to focus on trade, defense cooperation, and technology. However, discussions have been overshadowed by the recent deportation of Indian nationals from the U.S.

One official indicated that the meeting will provide political direction for bilateral ties, while detailed discussions on tariffs will continue post-visit. Despite Trump’s criticism of India’s trade policies, he has previously called Modi “fantastic.”

The U.S. is India’s largest trading partner, with two-way trade exceeding $118 billion in the 2023-24 fiscal year, during which India posted a $32 billion surplus. Trade relations between the two nations have steadily strengthened over the past decade, as Washington increasingly sees New Delhi as a strategic counterbalance to China’s growing regional influence.
