Created in 2010, the P20 is led by the Speakers and Presidents of the parliaments of G20 countries. The group seeks to engage parliamentary leaders in strengthening global collaboration, ensuring that parliaments play an active role in shaping solutions to global challenges. This year’s theme, “Parliaments for a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” reflects the group’s focus on addressing global issues such as hunger, poverty, and sustainability.
The summit officially opened on 7 November, with an opening ceremony followed by two working sessions. The first sessions addressed key topics such as the role of parliaments in combating hunger, poverty, and inequality on a global scale, as well as their contribution to promoting sustainable development.
On 8 November, the final working session focused on the role of parliaments in the construction of global governance and adapting to the challenges of the modern world. The formal proceedings concluded with the handover of the presidency to South Africa, the host for the next summit.
Throughout the event, Sir Lindsay Hoyle held bilateral meetings with parliamentary leaders from Brazil, Indonesia, Portugal, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia. These discussions were aimed at developing and strengthening inter-parliamentary relationships, further enhancing collaboration between the UK Parliament and other legislative bodies around the world.
