One Dead, 21 Injured in Explosion at Residential Area in Northern China; Two Missing

0

Beijing, China – An explosion ripped through a residential area in Taiyuan, the capital of northern China’s Shanxi province, on Wednesday (April 30), killing at least one person and injuring 21 others, according to state broadcaster CCTV. Two people remain missing as rescue efforts continue.

The blast occurred at around 1:17 p.m., sending plumes of smoke into the sky and shattering glass in nearby buildings. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.

Unverified footage circulating on Chinese social media platform Weibo appeared to show several vehicles ablaze outside a building, with thick black smoke pouring from the scene and damage to nearby apartment windows.

Emergency responders acted swiftly, deploying 210 firefighters and 43 fire trucks to the site, CCTV reported.

This latest incident comes just a day after a devastating restaurant fire in northeastern China’s Liaoning province killed 22 people. President Xi Jinping called that tragedy “a deeply sobering lesson.” Authorities have ruled out gas explosion and arson in that case, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

China has seen a troubling rise in similar accidents in recent years. Earlier in April, 20 people died in a fire at a nursing home in Hebei province, underscoring growing concerns over safety standards in residential and public buildings.

Türkiye and Italy Strengthen Defense Cooperation, Set $40 Billion Trade Target

0

ROME, ITALY — Türkiye and Italy took significant steps to deepen their strategic partnership during the 4th Intergovernmental Summit held in Rome on Tuesday. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced their intention to enhance defense industry collaboration and set an ambitious new target to elevate their bilateral trade exchange to $40 billion.

At a joint press conference, President Erdoğan highlighted the growing alignment between the two NATO allies, stating, “Relations between us are improving day by day. We share valuable alignment on significant matters.” He reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to strengthening defense ties with Italy, particularly in the context of advancing new partnerships and projects in the defense sector.

One notable outcome of the summit was the signing of agreements in multiple sectors, including defense, trade, industrial investments, transportation, and space exploration. Among the agreements, a key deal was the preliminary protocol between Turkish drone manufacturer Baykar and Italian defense giant Leonardo to jointly develop unmanned aerial systems (UAS), building on the surge in demand for advanced defense technologies following the conflict in Ukraine.

Prime Minister Meloni expressed confidence in the growing relationship between the two countries, stating, “I believe that we are laying new foundations for the further advancement of the excellent relations between Italy and Türkiye, which could easily be the number one in the Mediterranean.”

In the realm of trade, the two leaders outlined an ambitious new trade target of $40 billion—a significant increase from the $32.2 billion reached in 2024. Italy is Türkiye’s second-largest trading partner in Europe, and both sides expressed optimism that the newly signed agreements would fuel continued economic growth and collaboration.

Erdoğan also expressed his gratitude for Italy’s ongoing support of Türkiye’s EU membership bid, noting that the country has been a consistent advocate throughout the process. He reiterated that Italy’s role in Türkiye’s EU aspirations would remain pivotal moving forward.

Beyond economic and defense matters, Erdoğan and Meloni discussed regional and global issues, including the conflict in Ukraine, the Middle East, and migration. Erdoğan reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to peace efforts, particularly regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. “Restoring the ceasefire in Gaza is our top priority,” Erdoğan said, highlighting Türkiye’s role in facilitating peace talks.

On Libya, both leaders agreed to continue working together for a long-term solution to the nation’s ongoing instability. In Syria, Erdoğan emphasized Türkiye’s focus on reconstruction, strengthening local institutions, and preserving the country’s territorial integrity.

The summit, which was preceded by a ceremonial welcome at the Villa Pamphili residence in Rome, also included discussions on migration, with Türkiye playing a central role in curbing irregular arrivals to Europe. Both countries are also set to jointly host the Euro 2032 football tournament, which is expected to further boost their collaborative efforts in sports and infrastructure.

The summit will be followed by a business forum with representatives from both nations, further solidifying the economic and diplomatic ties between Türkiye and Italy.

Eleven people die in a mass crash in the Canadian city of Vancouver

0

Toronto, Canada – Canadian police reported Sunday that eleven people died in the mass crash that occurred late Saturday in the city of Vancouver, in western Canada.

Interim Vancouver Police Chief Steve Rai added at a press conference that the death toll could rise in the coming hours because the attack, which he said was not an act of terrorism, left dozens injured, many of them seriously.

“This is the darkest day in our city’s history, as thousands of members of Vancouver’s Filipino community gathered for an important cultural celebration. One person has shattered our collective sense of safety,” Rai said.

Mental problems of the perpetrator of the accident
The police official confirmed that the alleged perpetrator of the massacre, who was arrested immediately after the accident at the scene, is an individual “known” to the police and who suffers from mental health problems.

“I can say that the person in custody has a significant history of interactions with police and mental health professionals. I cannot publicly identify the person we have in custody because charges have not yet been filed,” he said.

Rai explained that the police believe it was not a terrorist act because “there is no evidence that this individual had any religious or political beliefs” and because of the individual’s past history.

The police report said the incident began at 8:14 p.m. local time Saturday (3:14 a.m. GMT Sunday) on a busy city street during the final moments of the Filipino-Canadian community’s Lapu Lapu street festival, when tens of thousands of people were still present.

A witness to the accident told Canadian Public Radio and Television that he saw a vehicle accelerate and hit pedestrians participating in the street festival at full speed.

The Prime Minister rules out “an active threat”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney ruled out “an active threat to Canadians” following last night’s deadly multiple vehicle crash in Vancouver.

In an appearance this morning at a hotel in Ontario, where he is campaigning for tomorrow’s election, Carney added that his government believes the gunman who plowed into a crowd with a speeding car “acted alone.”

“I’m shocked, devastated,” said Carney, who canceled a campaign event he was scheduled to hold this morning while his team fine-tunes the rest of his program, which was scheduled to take place today in Vancouver.

Authorities have not released the identities or ages of the victims. But Rai, visibly shaken, did indicate that there were men, women, and young people among the dead. Pressed on whether children were among the dead, given that the festival was a family event for the Filipino-Canadian community, the police chief simply said, dismayed, “There were young people.”

The mass attack occurred shortly before the country’s general elections on Monday.

It so happens that the leader of the social-democratic New Democratic Party (NDP), Jagmeet Singh, the third-largest political party in the country, was at the festival when the vehicle plowed into the crowd.

Speaking to the media, Singh, who was not injured in the incident, said: “I have no words to describe what I saw.” He added: “I don’t know what to say, it’s just horrific. I’m devastated.”

The EU is “horrified” after the fatal crash in Vancouver

The European Union’s (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, expressed her “horror” after the mass attack in Vancouver.

“Horrified by the tragic scenes in Vancouver, where lives were lost and many people injured at a festival,” Kallas said in a social media post.

For his part, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. offered his “deepest” condolences on Sunday and said he was “completely devastated” after a man plowed into a crowd participating in a Filipino-Canadian community celebration in Vancouver, Canada.

“On behalf of the Philippine government and the Filipino people, we would like to express our deepest condolences to the victims and our sympathy to the strong and successful Filipino community in Canada,” Marcos Jr. said in a statement.

At least two dead and ten injured in US airstrikes in Yemen’s capital

0

Sana’a, Yaman – At least two people were killed and ten others were injured Sunday in a series of bombings carried out last night by U.S. fighter jets against the Yemeni capital Sana’a, according to the Houthi rebels’ Ministry of Health.

The department said in a statement carried by the Yemeni news agency Saba that the victims, including children and women, were the result of “the US aggression targeting residential neighborhoods in the districts of Al Sabeen and Bani al Harith, north and south of the capital Sanaa, respectively.

According to the statement, “two citizens were killed and one was wounded” after a US attack on a house in the 14th of October neighborhood in Al Sabeen, and “nine others, including two women and three children, were wounded” in another attack on a residential neighborhood in the Bani al Harith district.

“The Ministry of Health condemned the continued attacks by the US enemy on residential neighborhoods, in flagrant violation of international humanitarian law,” the Houthi ministry denounced.

US warplanes have been launching massive airstrikes against Houthi positions almost daily for weeks, causing dozens of civilian deaths, according to the rebels, who do not provide casualty figures among their own.

At the direction of President Donald Trump, the United States launched an unprecedented bombing campaign against Yemen on March 15 with the stated goal of destroying the Houthis’ military capabilities. However, the insurgents report that the attacks have hit civilian sites and killed around 200 people.

Allied with Iran, the insurgents have responded with attacks on U.S. and Israeli warships, while urging the international community to pressure Washington to halt its intensive bombing campaign.

Mark Carney asks Canadians to give him a strong government to confront Trump

Toronto, Canada – In one of his final rallies before Monday’s general election, Canadian Liberal Party leader and Prime Minister Mark Carney called on Canadians to grant him a “strong government” to confront Donald Trump’s “betrayal” of a trade war against Canadians.

At a massive rally held at an aircraft hangar in Mississauga, near Toronto, Carney focused his attacks on U.S. President Donald Trump for threatening Canada and on opposition Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre for lacking experience outside of politics.

The economist, who replaced Justin Trudeau as leader of Canada’s Party and government in March, said the country needs a strong government because “President Trump’s trade war has literally broken the global economy and betrayed Canada, America’s neighbor, closest friend, and most steadfast ally.”

Public reaction against Trump

Carney, who polls predict will win the April 28 election, repeatedly repeated his attacks on Trump. Each time he mentioned the US president’s name, the diverse audience of several thousand, including Sikhs and other Asian minorities, erupted in boos.

“This is the time for serious leadership, and this is the time to unite as a country because we need to fight, protect, and win. We need to fight Trump’s tariffs, with retaliatory tariffs that do maximum damage to the U.S. We need to protect our workers,” Carney continued.

The only moment that changed the script was when two pro-Palestinian protesters interrupted the liberal leader’s speech with shouts of “genocide.” Both were quickly removed from the premises by security agents.

The Liberal leader asserted that Trump’s attacks, which have not only imposed tariffs on billions of dollars of Canadian imports but have expressed a desire to annex Canada, even using “economic force,” have one goal: “to break us so the U.S. can become our master.”

Carney, to the approval of the Canadian-flag-waving crowd, asserted that this will never happen because “Canada is not the U.S.”

“The U.S. is a cultural melting pot, Canada—look at this crowd, we’re all Canadians—it’s a mosaic.”

Carney criticizes Conservative rival

Regarding his main rival in Monday’s election, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, Carney said he is a “lifelong politician who worships at the altar of the free market despite never having worked in the private sector.”

“He’s the kind of politician who boasts about this, who has never changed his mind since he was 17,” he added. Those of you here who are over 17, have you learned anything in the last few decades? We don’t need slogans, we need solutions.

“This is a time for experience, not experiments,” he insisted, referring to his credentials as governor of the Bank of Canada (2008-2013) and the Bank of England (2013-2020), when he faced several major challenges.

“United, we defend Canada. United, we will win this trade war, we will build the strongest G7 economy that works for everyone. I am here today because Canada has given me everything: my family, my education, and my values. And in return, I am willing to give everything to Canada,” he concluded.

Trump, Zelensky, Lula, Milei, and other world leaders attend Pope Francis’ funeral

Rome — U.S. President Donald Trump offered a gesture of peace to French President Emmanuel Macron, the King and Queen of Spain, and other world leaders during Pope Francis’ funeral mass at St. Peter’s Square today, in a moment of formal diplomatic courtesy.

The exchange occurred during the rite of peace, a central part of the Catholic liturgy in which participants symbolically extend reconciliation and unity to one another.

During his term, Trump repeatedly criticized Macron and his wife, Brigitte, in ways that strained bilateral relations between Washington and Paris.

Minutes before the funeral began, Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a brief meeting that the White House described as “very productive.”

Just before the funeral began, Trump also briefly shook hands with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen amid their tariff standoff.

The funeral brought together a broad international representation, with some 60 heads of state and government, monarchs, and delegations from numerous countries present to bid farewell to the first Latin American pontiff in history.

Strong presence of Latin American leaders at the funeral

Five Latin American presidents—Argentine Javier Milei, Brazilian Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Ecuadorian Daniel Noboa, Dominican Luis Abinader, and Honduran Xiomara Castro—arrived in St. Peter’s Square this Saturday to attend Pope Francis’ funeral, where there was a strong presence of delegations.

Milei, a compatriot of Pope Francis, in the front row, alongside the Italian delegation led by Sergio Mattarella and Giorgia Meloni, as required by the strict protocol that the funeral will follow.

Meanwhile, Lula, who arrived with his wife Janja, entered Vatican Square shortly after Milei did, just minutes before the start of the solemn funeral and with bells ringing in the background.

“We said goodbye to Pope Francis in the place where we met him. The love was felt on every face: children, young people, women, men, all united by the gratitude and hope he sowed,” Xiomara Castro said in a message on her X account.

“It was a farewell filled with prayers, kisses to heaven, parents speaking to their children about what he taught us: to love the poor, the forgotten, those most in need,” continued the Honduran leader, who shared a video of the moment of honoring the coffin.

The number of Haitians in Dominican hospitals has dropped dramatically following immigration regulations

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – The influx of Haitians to Santo Domingo hospitals, and specifically to maternity wards, has dropped dramatically since public health centers began asking for identification last Monday as part of measures to combat illegal immigration from Haiti, EFE learned Wednesday.

At the Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia Maternity Hospital, in the center of the capital and the country’s main hospital, consultation staff confirmed to EFE this drop in Haitian women attending, “there are fewer than before,” and without wishing to make any kind of assessment, they simply stated: “We are here to provide the service.”

This lower influx also coincided with a doctor from the hospital and a member of the Dominican law enforcement agency at the reception of the health center, where representatives—always women—from the General Directorate of Immigration (DGM) were also present at the entrances.

Motherhood

At the entrance to the maternity hospital, a yellow school-style bus transports women without legal status to the migrant reception center in Haina, about 20 kilometers from Santo Domingo, where their biometric data and fingerprints are taken for deportation purposes. According to the DGM, repatriations are only carried out after confirming that “there are no health risks” for the patients.

On board the bus, which has been stationed there since 6 a.m., a 14-year-old girl who is 23 weeks pregnant speaks to EFE from a window, despite claiming she has presented her birth certificate, which states that she was born in the Dominican Republic, even though she is of Haitian descent.

“When I got to the gate, I gave them my birth certificate, they checked it, and then this man came and said, ‘You have to wait’ for them to upload me to the system. Then they took me to the van,” says this first-time mother, who reiterates that she was born in Santiago (northern Dominican Republic).

After being taken to the van, “my mother came and gave her the birth certificate, and they’re uploading it to the system. I have my birth certificate,” she insists, despite which the bus eventually departed with her inside along with another pregnant teenager who also claims to be Dominican, although she didn’t present documentation, accompanied by her mother.

Criticism of the controversial measure

Two weeks ago, Dominican President Luis Abinader announced a series of measures to address irregular immigration from Haiti, including the implementation of a migration verification protocol in 33 public hospitals across the country.

This means inspectors and immigration agents verify that patients have valid identification, a work permit, and proof of residency in the country, and that they cover the cost of the services received. Otherwise, they will receive medical care and, once recovered, be deported.

On the first day of implementation alone, 87 pregnant and laboring Haitian women were detained in Dominican hospitals.

In response, Amnesty International (AI) today called on the Dominican government to immediately end the collective expulsions of Haitians and repeal the protocol linking access to health services with deportation.

In a statement, AI’s director for the Americas, Ana Piquer, said that implementing a system that exposes migrants to deportation after receiving medical care “not only violates the right to health, but also dehumanizes undocumented people and will likely discourage them from seeking hospital care, putting lives at risk.”

The Dominican Republic’s relationship with Haiti

In an April address to the nation, President Abinader recommended that the thousands of undocumented Haitians living in the Dominican Republic “leave voluntarily” or else “they will be sought out and repatriated.”

Last October, Abinader ordered the mass deportation of irregular migrants, approximately 10,000 per week, almost entirely affecting Haitians.

According to official data, since this measure was taken, more than 180,000 Haitians in an irregular situation have been deported to Haiti, despite calls from international organizations and agencies to prevent returns to a country where more than 5,600 people died due to violence in 2024.

India-Pakistan Diplomatic Crisis Deepens After Kashmir Attack: Visas Canceled, Diplomats Expelled, Borders Closed

New Delhi, India – Tensions between India and Pakistan reached a new peak on Thursday as the Indian government suspended all visas for Pakistani citizens and ordered them to leave the country within 72 hours—extendable to five days for medical cases—amid a rapidly escalating diplomatic crisis. The move follows a deadly terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26 civilians, the worst in the region in over two decades.

RELATED NEWS : Pahalgam Terror Attack: 24 Killed, Over 20 Injured as TRF Targets Tourists in J&K

According to an official statement, all visas issued to Pakistani citizens under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme were revoked as of April 27, with medical visas extended until April 29. India has also urged its citizens in Pakistan to return immediately and advised against any travel to the neighboring country.

The Indian response comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired an emergency meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security, following Tuesday’s attack. India has directly blamed Pakistan for the massacre and announced a series of retaliatory measures, including the expulsion of Pakistani diplomats, the closure of the land border, partial suspension of travel permits, and most significantly, the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, a crucial water-sharing agreement in place since 1960.

In a fiery public address, Modi vowed swift justice: “India will identify, track, and punish every terrorist and their supporters. Terrorism will not go unpunished.”

Pakistan Responds with Visa Suspension, Diplomatic Expulsions, and Military Posturing

In retaliation, Pakistan suspended all visas for Indian nationals, expelled Indian diplomats, sealed its land border with India, and closed its airspace to Indian airlines. The measures were announced after a meeting of the National Security Committee, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and attended by top political and military leaders.

Pakistan also issued a stern warning regarding India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, calling any attempt to block or divert water from the Indus River system “an act of war.” The treaty, brokered by the World Bank, has endured despite several wars and decades of hostility. It grants Pakistan access to about 80% of the basin’s water—critical to its agricultural sector.

“Any attempt to stop or divert the flow of water will be met with full force,” warned the Pakistani government.

Military Tensions Rise

Amid the escalating rhetoric, Pakistan’s Navy announced live-fire naval exercises in the Indian Ocean, near the port of Gwadar. The drills, which include both surface and subsurface firing, began early Thursday morning and are scheduled to conclude Friday evening, raising concerns over possible military provocations.

Historical Backdrop

The latest flashpoint revives deep-rooted tensions over the disputed region of Kashmir—a conflict that dates back to the partition of British India in 1947. Both countries claim the territory in full but control only parts of it. Since 1989, Indian-administered Kashmir has experienced an armed insurgency, with New Delhi consistently accusing Islamabad of supporting militant groups—charges that Pakistan denies.

This week’s events mark the sharpest escalation since the 2019 Pulwama attack, which also sparked a military standoff. With both nuclear-armed nations taking hardline stances, international observers are closely watching the situation, fearing further deterioration in regional stability.

As both governments double down on national security and diplomatic retaliation, hopes for immediate de-escalation remain slim.
