Dubai, UAE (DT) -In a remarkable feat, Erling Haaland emerges victorious, surpassing football legends Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to secure the prestigious Best Men’s Player Award at the 2023 Globe Soccer Awards

Haaland scored 52 goals in 53 games for Manchester City last season, helping fire the club to glory in the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League.

Despite this impressive accomplishment, Haaland fell short in the voting for both the Ballon d’Or and The Best FIFA Men’s Player award, with Lionel Messi securing victory in those prestigious recognitions.

Messi was also among the nominees for the Globe Soccer’s Best Men’s Player prize, although the Argentina captain did not attend Friday’s event.

The remaining contenders included Jude Bellingham, Karim Benzema, Kevin De Bruyne, Kylian Mbappe, Victor Osimhen, Mohamed Salah, Bernardo Silva, and Vinicius Junior.

Although the runner-up in the vote was not officially disclosed, a split-screen featuring Haaland and Ronaldo was displayed just moments before the official announcement of the winner.

Ronaldo appeared to know what was coming though, as he was seen pointing at Haaland during the dramatic pause.

Ronaldo, a six-time recipient of this award (in 2011, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019), fell short of clinching it for the seventh time. However, the Al Nassr forward did not depart empty-handed from Friday’s event.

In a noteworthy achievement, Ronaldo was honored as the Best Middle East Player. Additionally, he secured the Maradona Award for emerging as the top-scoring player in world football last year, showcasing an impressive record of 54 goals in 59 games for Al Nassr and Portugal.

Finally, Ronaldo picked up the Fans’ Favourite Player of the Year award.

Barcelona and Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati won the award for Best Women’s Player.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid and England youngster Jude Bellingham won the Emerging Player award.

Neither Bonmati nor Bellingham attended Friday’s ceremony in Dubai but both delivered pre-recorded acceptance speeches.

The outcome of most awards hinged on dual votes—a public poll and a ballot cast by a panel comprising 30 influential figures in the football industry. Notable personalities in this panel included Francesco Totti, Iker Casillas, Luis Figo, and Marcello Lippi.
