NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met the Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba

Diplomat Times (New York) – Secretary General of NATO said the courage and determination of the Ukrainian people in defending their country against Russia’s war of aggression are an inspiration to the world. He stressed that, as President Putin escalates the war, it is even more important that NATO and Allies continue to step up support for Ukraine, in order to uphold its right oelf-defence, enshrined in the UN Charter. Mr Stoltenberg made clear that the partial mobilisation announced by President Putin demonstrates “the war is not going according to plan,” and his nuclear rhetoric was “dangerous and reckless.”

The Secretary General also met the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nathan to discuss international developments and the partnership between NATO and the UAE.

Mr Stoltenberg met Ms Vjosa Osmani of Kosovo to address the current political and security situation in Kosovo. He stressed that the NATO-led KFOR mission remains vigilant and committed to implementing its UN mandate. He also reaffirmed NATO’s support to the EU-facilitated dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.

On Thursday (21 September 2022), the Secretary General met the Prime Minister of Iraq Mustafa Al-Khadimi to address regional developments and NATO’s partnership with Iraq. Mr Stoltenberg stated that NATO’s training mission in Iraq (NMI) remains committed to advising the brave Iraqi security forces as they ensure that the terrorist group ISIS does not return.

The Secretary General also met with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian. They discussed Russia’s war in Ukraine, as well as the recent flare-up of violence between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The Secretary General welcomed the dialogue between the two sides and called for sustainable de-escalation.

The Secretary General is also taking part in the transatlantic dinner hosted by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

On Tuesday (20 September 2022), the Secretary General met the Moldovan President Maia Sandu to discuss Russia’s war in Ukraine and NATO’s support for our partner Moldova. He also met the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, to discuss regional and world developments, the partnership between NATO and Colombia, as well as efforts to address the shared challenge of climate change.
