Indonesia lifts 11-year Reddit ban after regulatory compliance

Jakarta, Indonesia — The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) confirmed the normalization of access to Reddit for users in Indonesia after an 11-year block, citing the digital platform’s move to strengthen compliance with national regulations.

Director General of Digital Space Monitoring Alexander Sabar explained that the decision to restore access to Reddit came following a review of statutory compliance.

“The Komdigi Ministry approved the normalization of access to reddit.com after conducting a hearing and reviewing the site’s compliance with applicable regulations in Indonesia,” he told ANTARA when contacted in Jakarta on Friday.

Sabar noted that his team had acknowledged Reddit’s efforts to implement geoblocking for users in Indonesia and remove content items classified as illegal by the government, most notably material related to gambling and pornography.

Although it has been unblocked in Indonesia, he added, it remains obligatory for Reddit’s operator to register as a private electronic system organizer and ensure strict and continued compliance with domestic regulations.

“Should we find illegal content being accessible from Indonesia in the future, the Komdigi Ministry will take steps to handle it in accordance with applicable regulations,” he affirmed.

The government blocked access to Reddit in Indonesia in 2015 after determining that content on the platform violated the country’s censorship regulations.

Since then, the platform had generally been accessible only through virtual private networks (VPNs) or alternative domain name system (DNS) services.

Launched in the United States in 2005, Reddit is widely known as a digital platform enabling people worldwide to create forums to discuss and exchange information and opinions on topics ranging from technology, entertainment, and gaming to politics.

Its users, known as Redditors, participate in topic-based communities called subreddits, where they can share text posts, images, videos, and links under rules enforced by volunteer moderators.
