Russian strike on Zaporizhzhia school kills over 30, Zelenskiy says

Kyiv, Ukraine — At least 31 people were killed after Russian forces launched a massive aerial bombing attack on a school in Komyshuvakha, near the front line in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, where civilians had gathered to collect humanitarian aid a day earlier, a Ukrainian regional official said Tuesday.

Acting head of the regional military administration Mykhailo Semikin announced the preliminary death toll during televised remarks, adding that emergency teams were continuing search-and-rescue operations for nearly 50 people reported missing.

According to Semikin, Russian forces used at least nine aerial bombs in the attack, including FAB-3000 models. These powerful guided munitions can be launched from aircraft operating dozens of kilometres away from their targets.

The FAB-3000 bombs reportedly carry explosive charges weighing up to 1.5 tonnes and are designed to destroy heavily fortified bunkers and concrete structures. Russian forces have increasingly deployed such weapons against Ukrainian military positions and settlements close to the front line, Semikin said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russian aircraft had dropped approximately 10 bombs on the school and an air-raid shelter where civilians had taken refuge.

Describing the incident as another devastating attack on civilians, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned Russia’s actions in a statement posted on X and called for a strong international response.

He urged Ukraine’s international partners to take decisive action, reject any return to normal diplomatic or economic relations with Moscow, and ensure accountability for attacks against innocent civilians.

Sybiha also stressed that there should be no concessions or rehabilitation for Russia without accountability for its actions.
