Kathmandu, Nepal — Nepal has raised the death toll from Wednesday’s devastating flash floods in the country’s northern and central regions to nearly 1,000, while 3,925 people remain missing, according to the latest figures released by Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).

The agency reported 36 additional deaths and a reduction of 322 in the number of missing people as of 6 pm Monday. The sharp change was largely attributed to updated information from isolated areas as communications were restored.
The number of missing workers from hydropower projects dropped from 933 to 639, although many are believed to remain trapped inside underground tunnels. Some 592 foreign nationals are also still unaccounted for.
More than 21,000 security personnel have been deployed for search-and-rescue operations. Relief supplies have been transported to affected areas by 37 trucks, 37 Bolero vehicles and nine helicopter flights.
Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal said the government is providing financial assistance to victims through the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund, which has received billions of Nepalese rupees in domestic and international contributions.
The disaster has also affected neighbouring Tibet, with the combined death toll previously reported at 955 and thousands still missing.
In India’s Uttar Pradesh, authorities have recovered 17 bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal. The bodies are believed to be linked to the floods but have not yet been included in Nepal’s official death toll.
Search, rescue and relief operations remain underway as authorities continue updating casualty and missing-person figures.
