New Delhi, India — India and Belgium have agreed to significantly expand cooperation across trade, defence, clean energy, critical minerals, semiconductors, research and talent mobility following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever in New Delhi on September 3.
The two leaders announced an Investment Fast-Track Mechanism to accelerate investments by Belgian companies in India and set an ambitious target of doubling bilateral trade over the next five years.
Defence cooperation will also be strengthened through greater collaboration in co-production, military exchanges and intelligence sharing. India will additionally appoint a resident defence attaché in Brussels.
The agreements come as India and the European Union move to deepen their broader economic partnership following the conclusion of a long-delayed free trade agreement in January 2026.
India’s economy grew 7.8% year-on-year in the April–June quarter, beating expectations and reinforcing the country’s position as a major growth market for European investment.
The India-Belgium partnership is set to gain further momentum as both sides seek closer economic, defence and strategic cooperation.
