Lima, Peru — At least five people were killed early Saturday in a head-on collision between an SUV and a station wagon on the Pan-American Highway South in Peru’s southern Ica region, according to local media reports.
The accident occurred at around 4:30 a.m. at kilometer 352 of the highway, along the stretch between Ica and Palpa, state-run Andina news agency reported, citing the Peruvian National Police.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the SUV driver may have crossed into the opposite lane, triggering the fatal collision.
All five occupants of the station wagon, which was travelling from Ica to Abancay, died at the scene. The front of the vehicle was completely crushed by the force of the impact.
The SUV driver sustained minor injuries and was detained before being taken to a police station in the Santiago district of Ica.
Police cordoned off the crash site as forensic experts and prosecutors carried out investigations and worked to identify the victims. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
