How UNHCR will take care Venezuelan refugees and migrants !

Venezuela –  UNHCR warned today that between 500 and 700 Venezuelans are leaving their country every day, despite borders across the region remaining closed. Forced to use informal routes where armed groups and trafficking networks are active, they are vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.

Venezuela does not easily come to mind when discussing the issue of displaced populations in many part of the world. Yet, according to United nations, more then 5.1 million people have fled from Venezuela since 2016 to flee the severe humanitarian crises caused by the Nicolas Maduro regime; indeed, these Venezuelan refugees constitute the second largest migrant population in the world, just after Syrians.

Conditions inside Venezuela have deteriorated during the pandemic and many are arriving weak and poorly nourished to host communities in Colombia that have also been hard-hit by COVID-19. UNHCR and IOM, jointly with another 157 organizations, released a US$1.44 billion plan on Thursday to respond to the growing needs of Venezuelan refugees and migrants hosted in 17 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean in 2021. Many have experienced loss of jobs and evictions during lockdowns and are more dependent than ever on humanitarian assistance. UNHCR reports that, in desperation, more than 122,000 Venezuelans crossed back into Venezuela during the pandemic, only to find conditions there so difficult that some are now attempting to , leave again, often on foot with young children.

“It was the year of the pandemic, but it was also the year of peace,” said Israel Ambassador to the US Ron Dermer

Israeli Ambassador to the US Ron Dermer held a virtual Hanukkah lighting on Saturday with Bahraini Ambassador to the US Abdulla Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa and UAE Ambassador to the US Yousef Al Otaiba, to mark the holiday’s third day by lighting the candles of the hanukkiah (candelabra) together.  The candle lighting was held in the wake of the signing of the Abraham Accords between Israel, the UAE and Bahrain earlier this year.
“It was the year of the pandemic, but it was also the year of peace,” said Dermer as an opening.

“UAE Ambassador to the US Yousef Al Otaiba and Bahraini Ambassador to the US Abdulla Al Khalifa played a critical role” in the signing of the Abraham Accords, continued the Israeli ambassador, “honored” that they have joined him to celebrate the Jewish holiday of light.

“This year, I’m lighting the Hanukkah candles with you at the same time the Jewish community in the UAE are lighting their Hanukkah candles. Now that is peace,” Otaiba said. “Next year, let us hope we can celebrate this holiday together in person.”

He continued, saying “this year, may look and feel a little different, as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to impact our daily lives. But I’m still filled with hope – that 2021 will bring a brand new start for us.”

Ashleigh Barty Australian tennis Player, No 15 to 1 story

Australia (DT) Dec 10: Since she returned to the sport in 2016, Barty has consistently made it clear tennis will never govern her life. Even last year when she rose from 15th to No 1, she played only 15 tour events and returned home as much as she could. After a long stay in Europe during her Roland Garros title run, she did not touch a racket for two weeks. That decision may have cost her a deeper run at the US Open but certainly not her sanity. This time, faced with the choice of travelling around the tour or remaining at home, she seems to have welcomed the chance to take a beat. The pandemic will not end at the turn of the new year and she will eventually have to decide when is suitable for her to travel again, but when she does she will not have forgotten how to play.

As most of her top rivals close off their season this week in Ostrava, Barty will see out 2020  ranked No 1 for the second consecutive season. After the tour was suspended in March, the 52-week ranking system was amended so that players could retain points garnered since March 2019. Barty has spent 46 weeks at No 1 and unless the ranking system changes again she will remain there for at least another 15 weeks until the end of the Australian Open.

The explosions and resulting fires at the port on Aug. 4 killed more than 200 people, injured thousands and left 300,000 homeless. Investigators say 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate that had been warehoused at the port for years set off the explosions.

The blasts, coupled with the country’s ongoing economic crisis, led many in Lebanon to demand government accountability. Critics say leaders knew about the ammonium nitrate being stored at the port.

Diab said Thursday he was surprised by the charges, but added that his “conscience is clear.”

90-year-old grandmother gets 1st dose of Pfizer vaccine in UK

0

London — U.K (DT) health authorities began rolling out the first doses of a widely tested and independently reviewed Covid-19 vaccine on Tuesday, starting a global immunization program that is expected to gain momentum as more serums win approval. The first shot came early in the morning at one of a network of hospital hubs around the country where the initial phase of the U.K. program will be rolled out on what has been dubbed “V-Day.”

Public health officials are asking the public to be patient because only those who are most at risk from the new coronavirus will be vaccinated in the early stages. Medical staff will contact people to arrange appointments, and most will have to wait until next year before there is enough vaccine to expand the program.

The first 800,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine in the U.K. are going to people over 80 who are either hospitalized or already have outpatient appointments scheduled, along with nursing home workers. Others will have to wait their turn, but all vaccinations will be provided free of charge via Britain’s National Health Service.

Among those older Britons scheduled to get vaccinated is Hari Shukla, of Newcastle.

“When I received the telephone call, I was very excited I got the opportunity of joining in and taking part in that,″ he said. “So we are very very pleased and happy and excited as well.″

Buckingham Palace refused to comment on reports that Queen Elizabeth II, 94, and her 99-year-old husband, Prince Philip, would be vaccinated as a public example of its safety.
