His wife, Begoña Gómez, will also join him, with plans for a separate visit to a foundation run by Nita Ambani, wife of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani.

In Vadodara, which lies in Modi’s homestate of Gujrata, Sánchez and Modi will inaugurate an Airbus factory, where 40 of the 56 C295 aircraft ordered by the Indian Air Force will be produced.

Mumbai will be the trip’s second stage, featuring a business forum with Indian and Spanish business representatives, a visit to a Tata technology center, and a tour of Bollywood studios.

Sánchez aims to boost cultural collaboration and showcase Spain’s bid to become a leading European audiovisual hub, with aspirations for more Indian productions filmed in Spain and potential studios established on Spanish soil.

Sánchez’s first trip to India marks a fresh start for bilateral relations, underscoring India’s increasing global influence as the world’s most populous democracy and a pivotal partner in addressing global challenges, including climate change.

Bollywood Engagement: A Cultural Celebration On his itinerary, PM Sanchez is set to meet with leading figures in Bollywood, including prominent directors and producers, to discuss cross-cultural projects aimed at enhancing Spain’s presence in the Indian entertainment market. Spain, with its picturesque locales, has long been a favorite for Bollywood shoots, and Sanchez hopes to foster additional co-productions and explore opportunities for Spain to play a bigger role in the global film industry.

Airbus Deal to Enhance Defense Ties One of the most anticipated points of Sanchez’s visit is a meeting on defense cooperation, particularly focusing on an Airbus manufacturing collaboration. Airbus, with a strong presence in both nations, is expected to finalize agreements to manufacture defense and civilian aircraft components in India. This deal not only promises a significant boost to India’s “Make in India” initiative but also symbolizes a robust Spain-India partnership in defense technology.

The visit is poised to deepen Spain-India relations on all fronts, from fostering cultural exchange to securing critical defense and business partnerships.

Three journalists killed in Israeli strike in southern Lebanon, media report

0

Beirut, Lebanon (DT) – An Israeli strike early on Friday morning killed at least three journalists as they slept in a guesthouse in Hasbaya in southern Lebanon, Lebanese media reported.

Those killed included cameraman Ghassan Najjar and engineer Mohamed Reda who worked for pro-Iranian news outlet Al-Mayadeen and one cameraman who worked for Hezbollah’s Al-Manar, Al-Mayadeen reported.

Reporters at the scene said the bungalow where the men were sleeping was directly targeted.

“The occupation’s targeting of the journalists’ residence was deliberate, and there are injured journalists from other Arab channels,” Ghassan bin Jiddo, the director of Al-Mayadeen, said on the channel’s X account.

“We hold the occupation fully responsible for this war crime, in which journalist crews, including the Al-Mayadeen team, were targeted.”

The killings come 24 hours after an Israeli strike hit an office used by Al-Mayadeen in Beirut’s southern suburbs.

Lebanon’s health ministry said one person was killed and five others, including a child, were wounded in that strike.

Lebanese authorities say the Israeli military campaign has killed more than 2,500 people and displaced more than 1 million people, spawning a humanitarian crisis.

On Thursday, an Israeli strike killed three Lebanese soldiers as they tried to evacuate wounded people from the border village of Yater, the Lebanese army said. There was no comment from the Israeli military.

The U.S. has said Israel should take steps to avoid civilian casualties and not endanger U.N. peacekeepers or Lebanese army troops in its attacks in Gaza and Lebanon.

Israel, which has been criticised for shelling hospitals and schools, has said it precisely targets Hamas and Hezbollah militants, accusing them of using civilians as shields.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said that as of Oct. 24, its preliminary investigations showed at least 128 journalists and media workers had been killed since the start of the Gaza war, making it the deadliest period for journalists since CPJ began gathering data in 1992.

It said the overwhelming majority were Palestinian media workers, 123 Palestinian, two Israeli, and three Lebanese.

At least five journalists have been killed over the past year of conflict in Lebanon, including a Reuters visuals journalist.

India hands over first tranche of humanitarian assistance to Lebanon

Beirut, Lebanon (DT) – India’s Ambassador to Lebanon, Noor Rahman Sheikh, on Thursday, handed over the first tranche of humanitarian assistance sent by India to Lebanon. Lebanon’s Health Minister Firas Abiad received the consignment of medicines. Indian Embassy in Lebanon expressed India’s commitment to strengthening close ties with Lebanon.

In a post on X, the Indian Embassy in Lebanon stated, “First tranche of India’s humanitarian assistance arrives in Beirut. Lebanon’s Health Minister HE Dr Firas Abiad received the consignment of medicines in the presence of Amb @NoorRahman_IFS. India stands committed to strengthening close ties with Lebanon.”

On October 18, India had dispatched the first tranche of 11 tons of medical supplies to Lebanon as part of a humanitarian effort to support the nation amid rising tensions and the ongoing conflict in southern Lebanon. A total of 33 tons of medical supplies are being sent.

In a post on X, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “India sends humanitarian assistance to Lebanon. A total of 33 tons of medical supplies are being sent. The first tranche of 11 tons of medical supplies was dispatched today. The consignment comprises of a wide range of pharmaceutical products, including cardiovascular medications, NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), anti-inflammatory agents, antibiotics and anaesthetics.”

Meanwhile, Lebanon’s Ambassador to India, Rabie Narsh, highlighted India’s swift humanitarian aid to Lebanon amid the escalating tension in West Asia.

While addressing a press conference on the war on October 18, Narsh stated, “The humanitarian aid has flooded Lebanon since the aggression started. We have, thankfully, great friends in the world. On top of them is India. India is our good friend. We enjoyed very good relations, excellent relations since maybe the independence of both countries dated 70 or more than 80 years back.”

He further emphasised India’s proactive support. He said, “India, even before asking, has rushed to propose humanitarian aid. India has offered about 30 tonnes of medicines. India has already been supporting us. We have been exchanging good relations in the international arena.”

The Lebanese envoy expressed concerns about the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, emphasizing the need for the United States to reassess its support for Israel. He said that the US, as Israel’s strongest ally and sponsor, has the power to stop Israel’s aggression and bring an end to the violence.

“The US is funding Israel, providing them with the latest technology, latest weapons, and even nuclear weapons,” Narsh said. “But then you hear US officials say they cannot control Netanyahu. You can. If you want, you can,” he said.

“Netanyahu is a war criminal, and I’m not saying this emotionally. The International Court of Justice and International Criminal Court have issued a warrant against Netanyahu because they said they have credible proof that he committed war crimes. So he is a war criminal, but still, he is the spoiled child of the United States, of the administration,” the envoy added.

Canada will reduce immigration targets as Trudeau acknowledges his policy failed

0

Toronto, Canada (DT) — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday that Canada will significantly reduce the number of new immigrants it allows into the country after acknowledging that his government failed to get the balance right coming out of the pandemic.

Trudeau’s Liberal government was criticized for its plan to allow 500,000 new permanent residents into the country in each of the next two years. On Thursday, he said next year’s target will now be 395,000 new permanent residents and that the figure will drop to 380,000 in 2026 and 365,000 in 2027.

“In the tumultuous times as we emerged from the pandemic, between addressing labor needs and maintaining population growth, we didn’t get the balance right,” Trudeau said.

“Immigration is essential for Canada’s future, but it must be controlled and it must be sustainable.”

Trudeau, who is facing calls from within his own party not to seek a fourth term, has endured mounting criticism over his immigration policies and the negative impact that population growth has had on housing affordability.

He said his government will reduce the number of immigrants Canada brings in over the next three years, and that this will freeze population growth over the next two years. Canada reached 41 million people in April. The population was 37.5 million in 2019.

“Even Justin Trudeau wants to close Canada’s Borders,” Donald Trump wrote Thursday on social media while arguing for tougher border measures in the U.S.

Trudeau said Canada needs to stabilize its population growth to allow all levels of government to make necessary changes to health care, housing and social services so that it can accommodate more people in the future.

“Far too many corporations have chosen to abuse our temporary measures, exploiting foreign workers while refusing to hire Canadians for a fair wage,” Trudeau said. “All while under the watch of provinces, some colleges and universities are bringing in more international students than communities can accommodate, treating them as an expendable means to line their own pockets. That’s unacceptable, and it needs to change.”

Immigration Minister Marc Miller said the lower immigration numbers will help with the country’s housing shortage.

He also acknowledged the change in public opinion about immigration.

“That volume that we have put forward is of concern,” Miller said.

Miller said the government sees the pressures facing Canadians, and that it must adapt its policies accordingly.

“We are an open country, but not everyone can come to this country,” he said, noting that Canada will continue to welcome outsiders and that the government’s immigration targets remain ambitious.

Trudeau’s government has long touted Canada’s immigration policy and how Canada is better than peer countries in welcoming newcomers and integrating them into the economy.

Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the opposition Conservative Party, accused Trudeau of destroying the national consensus on immigration.

“He has destroyed our immigration system through his own personal incompetence and destroyed 150 years of common sense consensus with the Liberals and Conservatives on that subject,” Poilievre said.

“He cannot fix what he broke on immigration and housing or anything else because he is busy fighting his own caucus,” he added.

Poilievre was referring to calls by some lawmakers from Trudeau’s own party to not run for a fourth term. Those calls represent one of the biggest tests of Trudeau’s political career, but he said Thursday that he intends to stay on through the next election.

Nelson Wiseman, professor emeritus of political science at the University of Toronto, said the Trudeau government messed up badly on immigration.

“The government’s logic — to grow the economy and sustain an aging Canadian population by bringing in more young immigrants — was sound. But Ottawa has little control over meeting the housing, health, education, and other welfare needs of residents, whether they are citizens or immigrants,” Wiseman said.

“These are all provincial government responsibilities, and there was little cooperation or coordination between the two levels of government,” he said.

A certain percentage of Canadians have always been xenophobic, but much less so than in some other countries, Wiseman said.

“Many Canadians have turned against the recent growing immigrant and temporary worker/student influx because of the growing housing, health, education, and other welfare challenges. Ottawa has read the polls and is responding accordingly,” he said.

Pakistan’s imprisoned former PM Imran Khan’s wife freed on bail

0

Islamabad, Pakistan (DT) — The wife of Pakistan’s imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan was released from a high-security prison in the garrison city of Rawalpindi on Thursday, a day after a court granted her bail in a graft case, her lawyers said.

The release of Bushra Bibi came six months after an appeals court suspended a 14-year sentence the couple received after being found guilty of retaining and selling state gifts in violation of government rules when Khan was in power.

But Khan and Bibi, who is his third wife, were charged in July with new counts of retaining state gifts and kept in detention pending trial. Both have denied any wrongdoing.

Khan has been embroiled in more than 150 legal cases since 2022, when he was ousted in a no-confidence vote in parliament.

Khan, who remains a popular opposition leader, has been convicted and sentenced in several cases that were later overturned or suspended in appeals.

Bibi was freed from Adiala prison on Thursday, according to her lawyer Salman Safdar and Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party. Local TV stations showed her arriving at home in Islamabad on Thursday afternoon.

Khan’s legal team has filed a petition before a court seeking bail in same graft case.

The latest development came a day after dozens of Congressmen wrote a letter to the President Joe Biden, urging him to play his role for the release of all political prisoners, including Khan.

In June, a U.S. congressional resolution called for an independent investigation into allegations that Pakistan’s parliamentary elections were rigged, a charge which Pakistan denied.

Khan’s PTI party won the most seats in the Feb. 8 vote but fell short of a majority, paving the way for its rivals to form a coalition government.

3,000 North Korean soldiers already in Russia for Ukraine deployment: South Korea

Seoul, South Korea (DT)- South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) has reported that approximately 3,000 North Korean soldiers have already arrived in Russia, where they are preparing for potential deployment to the frontlines in Ukraine.

The number of North Korean troops involved could rise to 10,000 by December, according to intelligence shared with South Korean lawmakers, although NATO and Washington have yet to confirm the claims.

This follows an earlier report from the NIS on Friday, which stated that North Korea planned to send a total of 12,000 troops, including a Special Forces unit.

The NIS also indicated that 1,500 North Korean troops are currently stationed at bases in the Russian Far East, where they are undergoing training and receiving weapons, uniforms, and Russian identity cards.

A photo released by the official North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on 23 October 2024 shows North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspecting strategic missile bases, at an undisclosed location in North Korea, 23 October 2024. EFE/EPA/KCNA EDITORIAL USE ONLY

The NIS believes the initial transfer of 1,500 soldiers, which occurred between October 8 and 13, has been followed by additional deployments that have nearly doubled the number of North Korean troops on Russian soil.

NIS Director Cho Tae-yong briefed committee members on the developments, according to ruling People’s Power Party (PPP) MP Lee Seong-kwon and opposition Democratic Party (DP) MP Park Seon-won, who spoke to local media.

Park stated that the NIS provided “well-founded information” indicating that around 10,000 troops will be deployed to Ukraine in December, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

NATO and Washington have yet to confirm these reports, which Moscow has dismissed as “hoaxes,” and Pyongyang has labeled “absurd comments.”

The NIS believes, along with many experts, that the troop deployment is linked to the strategic partnership agreement signed between Pyongyang and Moscow in June, which outlines mutual assistance in the event of an attack on either country.

This agreement has come into play following Ukrainian incursions into Russia’s Belgorod and Kursk regions.

At least 18 killed, dozens wounded in Israeli bombing in north Gaza

Jerusalem, Israel (DT) – At least 18 Palestinians were killed Thursday after Israel bombed a school housing displaced persons in Nuseirat refugee camp in the center of the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian medical sources.

The strike, which mostly killed children and elderly people, also wounded at least 42 others, medical sources at Al Awda hospital in Nuseirat said, warning that the casualty toll could rise further.

The bombing targeted the Al Suhada school in Nuseirat, which was housing hundreds of displaced people, according to Palestinian media.

In a statement, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said the strike had targeted “Hamas terrorists who were operating inside a command and control center (…) which was embedded inside a compound that previously served” as a school.

The IDF added that “numerous steps” had been taken prior to the strike to limit harm to civilians.

In recent hours, Israeli artillery attacks have also been reported in Bureij, a refugee camp near Nuseirat, with one death confirmed so far.

In the southern city of Khan Yunis, another Israeli strike on a house killed three people, according to Palestinian sources.

At least 55 Palestinians have been killed and 132 wounded in the Gaza Strip in the last 24 hours amid an Israeli offensive targeting the towns of Beit Lahia and Jabalia in the north of the enclave.

Over 800 people have been killed since the siege of northern Gaza began on Oct. 4, when Israel ordered civilians to evacuate the area.

According to the Hamas-run Gazan health ministry, 42,847 people – the majority civilians, women and children – have been killed and over 100,000 wounded since the conflict escalated over a year ago.

An estimated 10,000 bodies are also believed to be buried under the rubble of the enclave’s destroyed buildings.

BRICS condemns Israeli bombings in Lebanon and Gaza, calls for immediate ceasefire

0

Moscow/Kazan, Russia (DT) – The BRICS nations on Wednesday condemned Israel’s bombings of Lebanese territory and humanitarian centers in Gaza, calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities in both regions.

In its final declaration at the Kazan summit in Russia, the bloc also warned of the global risks posed by escalating tensions.

“We stress the urgent need for an immediate comprehensive and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and detainees from both sides who are being held illegally, and the unimpeded, sustained and large-scale flow of humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip, as well as an end to all aggressive actions,” said the declaration.

The bloc condemned the deaths of civilians and the massive damage caused to civilian infrastructure due to Israeli attacks in Lebanon.

The BRICS call for an “immediate” end to hostilities in both Gaza and Lebanon.

The joint statement warned that further escalation of the conflict in the Gaza Strip threatens to increase tensions, extremism, and extremely damaging consequences at the regional and global levels.

The nine BRICS members — Russia, China, Brazil, India, South Africa, along with Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Ethiopia — also condemned attacks on UN personnel and “threats to their security,” calling on Israel to immediately cease such actions.

The BRICS countries denounced the bombing of the Iranian embassy in Damascus last April and a recent “terrorist attack” involving Israeli actions in Beirut. “These actions constitute a serious violation of international law,” the statement added.

The Kazan Declaration was adopted following two meetings, one in a reduced format and another in an expanded format, which lasted over four hours.

Prior to the summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with leaders of the group’s founding countries, and further meetings were held with other attending leaders, including those from Venezuela and Turkey.
