Former Hong Kong Stock Exchange CEO Zhou Wenyao dies
Hong Kong (DT)- Zhou Wenyao, the former chief executive of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, passed away last night at the age of 76.
Zhou Wenyao graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, and later obtained a Diploma in Management from the University of Hong Kong, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Hong Kong, and a Diploma in Finance from the Chinese University of China. He joined the government executive grade in the 1970s, and later switched to the business world, including working for Sun Hung Kai Securities.
Zhou Wenyao joined the Stock Exchange in 1989. From 1991 to 1997, he served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Stock Exchange. except Japan) Regional President.

He rejoined the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2003. During his tenure, he experienced the wave of listings of state-owned domestic banks, the investment boom of the Hang Seng Index soaring 30,000 points due to the “through train to Hong Kong stocks”, and the impact of the 2008 financial tsunami. Taking into account the stock exchange, the predecessor of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Zhou Wenyao served as the chief executive of the exchange twice and officially retired in early 2010.
After Zhou Wenyao left the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, he served as the chairman of Hong Kong Cyberport Management Co., Ltd., and an independent non-executive director of Bank of China, CITIC Corporation, and China Mobile. He has faded out of the financial industry in recent years. Since May 2022, after he resigned as an independent non-executive director of China Mobile, he has not served as a director of any listed company.
