Stampede at New Delhi Railway Station Kills at Least 18, Including 14 Women

0

NEW DELHI, India — A tragic stampede at New Delhi railway station late Saturday night left at least 18 people dead, including 14 women, according to the Press Trust of India news agency. Many of the victims were Hindu pilgrims traveling to the Maha Kumbh festival in Prayagraj, northern India, said Delhi’s caretaker chief minister, Atishi.

The stampede occurred when thousands of passengers crowded the railway station, waiting to board their trains. Authorities said the chaos erupted after some passengers slipped and fell while descending from a footbridge connecting the platforms, triggering a chain reaction.

Eyewitnesses described a scene of panic and confusion. Sheela Devi, who came to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain Hospital to collect her daughter-in-law’s body, said an announcement about a platform change led to chaos among travelers. “The crowd went out of control, and no one could manage it,” said Nikhil Kumar, a shopkeeper who witnessed the surge.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, stating he was “distressed by the stampede.” He added, “My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. Authorities are providing all necessary assistance.”

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the tragedy.

The incident comes just weeks after a separate stampede at the Maha Kumbh festival resulted in the deaths of at least 30 people, underscoring concerns over crowd control at major religious and public gatherings in India.

South Korean and U.S. top diplomats meet in Munich to discuss alliance and Trump tariffs

0

MUNICH/SEOUL – The top diplomats of South Korea and the United States held their first one-on-one meeting Saturday since the inauguration of the second Donald Trump administration, with discussions centered on the bilateral alliance, North Korea, and the U.S.’s latest tariff policies.

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, as Seoul seeks to navigate its relationship with the new Trump administration, which has introduced bold tariff policies while maintaining an ambiguous stance on North Korea.

The meeting also came at a critical time for South Korea, which has been working to sustain diplomatic stability following the shocking martial law attempt by now-impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol in December last year.

Trump’s recent announcement of plans to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum, along with potential new tariffs on vehicles and semiconductors, has raised concerns that South Korea could become the next target. In anticipation, South Korea’s foreign ministry had earlier stated that “bilateral economic cooperation” would be a key topic in the discussions, alongside North Korea’s nuclear issue and trilateral security cooperation with Japan.

Upon his arrival in Munich on Friday (local time), Cho emphasized his intent to explore solutions with Rubio regarding the Trump administration’s planned and potential tariffs on South Korea. He also highlighted strategic cooperation in key industries such as shipbuilding, atomic energy, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence.

Cho reiterated South Korea’s commitment to the alliance, emphasizing how the country’s contributions align with Trump’s “Make America Great Again” vision. The meeting was also expected to reaffirm Washington’s commitment to deterring North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats.

A significant point of discussion was the U.S. approach to North Korea’s denuclearization under Trump’s second term, ensuring that both allies remain aligned on this critical security issue. The topic has gained renewed attention after Trump and his officials recently referred to North Korea as a “nuclear power,” sparking debate in Seoul over whether Washington might be shifting toward recognizing Pyongyang as a nuclear-armed state. However, Trump later reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to the “complete denuclearization of North Korea” during a summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

Following the bilateral talks, Cho was scheduled to participate in a trilateral meeting alongside Rubio and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya. The three officials were expected to emphasize the importance of strengthening and advancing trilateral security cooperation.

Cho’s three-day visit to Munich also marked his first overseas diplomatic engagement since the turmoil surrounding the martial law attempt in South Korea. His participation in high-level meetings underscores Seoul’s commitment to maintaining strong alliances amid shifting geopolitical and economic landscapes.

‘I thought I was swallowed’: The kayaker who escaped a whale’s mouth

A 23-year-old recounted his terrifying experience of being swallowed by a humpback whale. While kayaking in Bahia El Aguila, Chile, he and his boat were suddenly engulfed by the massive creature.

BAHIA EL AGUILA, CHILE – The last thing kayaker Adrian Simancas expected on his trip was to end up inside a humpback whale’s mouth. Yet, for a few surreal moments, that’s exactly where he found himself.

The 23-year-old had been paddling near the San Isidro Lighthouse in Chile’s Strait of Magellan when the massive creature surfaced, engulfing both him and his kayak. Before he could process what was happening, the whale spat him back out, leaving him dazed but miraculously unharmed.

Simancas described the experience as surreal, recalling the dark blue and white colors before feeling a slimy texture against his face. “I closed my eyes to brace for impact, but it was soft, like being hit by a wave,” he said.

CHILEAN KAYAKER SURVIVES BEING ENGULFED BY HUMPBACK WHALE

A viral video captured by his father, who was paddling nearby, has drawn global attention. While many playfully compared Simancas to Jonah and Pinocchio, marine biologists clarified that humpback whales lack the ability to swallow humans due to their small esophagus and filter-feeding anatomy.

Despite his survival, experts warn against close interactions with whales. “A humpback whale is around 18 meters long. Even unintentionally, it could have seriously injured him,” said marine biologist María José Pérez Álvarez.

Kayaking professionals in the region also raised concerns over safety measures. Guillermo Meza, a kayaking tour operator, stated that Simancas and his father had ventured too far into open waters. “We advise maintaining a distance of more than 100 meters from whales,” he said.

“CHILEAN KAYAKER’S VIDEO EMERGES AFTER SURVIVING ENCOUNTER WITH HUMPBACK WHALE.”

Chilean law requires a legal sighting distance of at least 100 meters from whales, something Simancas insists he did not violate. “The whale lunged from behind. It was a total surprise,” he said.

Following the encounter, Simancas and his father carefully navigated their way back, their journey cut short due to a damaged paddle. Reflecting on the experience, Simancas says it has deepened his respect for nature. While he plans to continue his outdoor adventures, he will be taking extra safety precautions. “I felt blessed with a second chance,” he said. “But I’ll be waiting until next season before going rafting again.”

Zelenskyy and Vance at MSC2025: Ukraine Demands ‘Security Guarantees’ as Trump Pushes for End to Ukraine-Russia Conflict

Munich, Germany — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared on Friday at the Munich Security Conference that Ukraine will not enter peace talks with Russia until it secures “security guarantees” from Western allies, including the United States. Zelenskyy made the statement during a meeting with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, marking a critical moment in ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the Ukraine-Russia war.

RELATED NEWS : Russia releases imprisoned American Marc Fogel in what US calls a step toward the end of Ukraine war

Before his meeting with Vance, Zelenskyy emphasized that he would only meet in person with Russian President Vladimir Putin after a negotiated plan is agreed upon with U.S. President Donald Trump. The Ukrainian president’s remarks came as part of a broader conversation at the conference about the future of global security and the path to peace in Ukraine.

In his address, Vice President Vance delivered a blunt message to European officials, warning that the real threat to Europe may not come from Russia or China, but from internal challenges. “The threat that I worry the most about vis-à-vis Europe is not Russia. It’s not China. It’s not any other external actor,” Vance said. “What I worry about is the threat from within — the retreat of Europe from some of its most fundamental values, values shared with the United States of America.” He further cautioned European leaders, “If you’re running in fear of your own voters, there’s nothing America can do for you.”

Vance’s remarks came amidst mounting concerns over the shifting dynamics of U.S. foreign policy under the Trump administration, particularly in regard to Ukraine. The Vice President touched on the three-year-old war in Ukraine but focused primarily on broader issues affecting Europe, such as free speech and migration. He criticized the European approach to illegal migration, highlighting a recent attack in Munich by a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker.

Earlier in the day, Vance met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, reiterating the U.S. administration’s call for NATO members to meet defense spending targets. Currently, only 23 of NATO’s 32 members are reaching the alliance’s 2% of GDP target for defense spending.

Meanwhile, hours before the meeting between Zelenskyy and Vance, a Russian drone strike targeted the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, landing a high-explosive warhead near its protective shell. Fortunately, no increase in radiation levels was reported, but Zelenskyy labeled the attack a “clear greeting from Putin” to the security conference. Russian officials denied Ukraine’s claims, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov calling the accusations unfounded.

The backdrop of these talks was the increasingly uncertain position of Ukraine’s future in NATO, as Trump has voiced skepticism about both Ukraine joining the alliance and its ability to regain territories lost to Russia. Trump’s comments earlier in the week suggested that a peace deal would likely require Ukraine to cede certain territories, including Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.

“The Ukraine war has to end,” Trump told reporters Thursday, calling the conflict “ridiculous” and lamenting the death toll. His position has left many Europeans grappling with how to maintain NATO’s post-WWII security framework and whether the U.S. will continue to provide significant military and economic aid to Ukraine. Zelenskyy, while acknowledging the challenges, expressed belief that Trump holds the key to a peaceful resolution.

As the peace talks continue to evolve, Trump’s stance has further complicated matters. He has been vague about his specific intentions, though it’s clear that he sees the end of the war as a priority. Zelenskyy, however, remains firm in his belief that a negotiated settlement will require both Trump and U.S. leadership, stating that the U.S. president even gave him his personal phone number.

In a striking interview with the Wall Street Journal, Vance hinted at the possibility of sanctions or even military action if Russia refuses to negotiate a peace deal that guarantees Ukraine’s sovereignty. This marks a departure from the more restrained tone typically associated with the Trump administration, which has generally sought to avoid military escalation while pushing for a swift resolution.

The situation in Europe is rapidly evolving, as French Deputy Foreign Minister Benjamin Haddad warned that Europe must reconsider its reliance on the U.S. for security, especially in the face of a potential Russian victory in Ukraine. Haddad stressed that a Russian victory could have global repercussions, particularly in Asia.

As the conference unfolds, all eyes remain on Vance’s next steps and whether the Trump administration will clarify its strategy for Ukraine, NATO, and global security. With Europe’s future security on the line, the coming months could mark a decisive turning point in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

Trump Hosts Modi at the White House, Pledges Stronger U.S.-India Trade, but Warns of Higher Tariffs

Washington, USA President Donald Trump welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the White House on Thursday with a bear hug, calling him “a great friend of mine.” Despite the warm reception, Trump issued a stark warning that India would not be exempt from the higher tariffs he has started imposing on U.S. trade partners around the world.

In a joint news conference, Trump, who had previously referred to India as the “tariff king,” criticized India’s import levies as “very unfair and strong.” He declared, “Whatever India charges, we charge them,” suggesting that India’s tariff rates no longer held significant weight in U.S. trade policy.

Trump, who has focused on reducing the U.S. trade deficit, particularly with countries like China and the European Union, reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring fairness in trade relations with India. He suggested that boosting U.S. energy exports to India could help narrow the $50 billion trade deficit, with U.S. exports to India totaling about $70 billion in 2023, while imports were valued at $120 billion. He also emphasized that both countries were working on a major trade deal that could be concluded later this year.

Modi, ever diplomatic, showered praise on Trump, borrowing from the president’s “Make America Great Again” slogan, saying he was determined to “Make India Great Again” or “MIGA.” The two leaders also discussed military cooperation, with Trump confirming that the U.S. would increase its military sales to India by “many millions of dollars,” including the long-awaited F-35 stealth fighter planes.

A key moment during the conference was Trump’s commitment to extraditing one of the 2008 Mumbai attacks’ plotters. He mentioned the case of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, who was convicted in the U.S. for planning the attack on a Danish newspaper. Trump stated, “He’s going to be going back to India to face justice,” adding that this could be the first of many such extraditions.

Before Modi’s arrival, Trump signed an order to increase tariffs to match the import tax rates that other nations impose, a move that impacts countries globally, including India. Despite these tariff concerns, India has expressed willingness to lower some of its own levies, such as on Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and had already reduced retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods like almonds, apples, and chickpeas.

In a show of unity, Modi responded to Trump’s focus on tariffs, acknowledging India’s stance of peace despite external perceptions of neutrality, particularly in relation to the ongoing war in Ukraine. “India has a side, and that side is of peace,” Modi said, appreciating Trump’s diplomatic engagement with Russia and Ukraine’s leaders earlier in the week.

Trump also used the meeting to highlight his broader economic strategy, noting that he was committed to eliminating U.S. trade deficits with all countries, following similar discussions with leaders from Japan and Israel.

The two leaders touched on other pressing issues, including immigration. Modi confirmed that India would accept the return of illegal Indian immigrants in the U.S., in line with Trump’s hardline stance on immigration. With over 725,000 undocumented Indian immigrants in the U.S., Modi expressed India’s preparedness to take back any verified Indian nationals. Trump reiterated his plan for “mass deportations,” with a specific focus on the rising number of Indian nationals attempting to enter the U.S. through the U.S.-Canada border.

Modi’s visit marks the fourth foreign leader to meet with Trump since his inauguration last month, following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Japan’s Shigeru Ishiba, and Jordan’s King Abdullah II. Before the White House meeting, Modi had also met with national security adviser Mike Waltz and Tesla founder Elon Musk.

The visit underlined the complexities of U.S.-India relations, balancing trade, military cooperation, and immigration concerns, all while Trump maintains his tough stance on global tariffs.

Explosion in Pakistan’s Balochistan kills 11 coal miners, injures 7, with 2 in critical condition

0

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN – An explosion targeting a vehicle carrying coal miners in southwestern Pakistan killed at least 11 people and injured six others, authorities said Friday.

The blast, caused by an improvised explosive device, occurred in the Harnai district of Balochistan, a region long plagued by violence.

“A roadside bomb was planted and detonated as the miners’ vehicle passed by,” a local official said.

Security forces arrived at the scene, cordoning off the area after transporting the victims to medical facilities, Geo News reported. Some of the wounded were in critical condition, and arrangements were being made to transfer them to Quetta for treatment.

The explosion is the latest in a series of bombings in the Shahrag area, home to several coal mines. However, officials described the casualties from this attack as the highest in recent incidents.

The provincial mining authority said most of the miners killed and injured in the attack were from Swat and Shangla districts. No group has claimed responsibility for the bombing. The official, who declined to be identified, added that it may have been a remote-operated device.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. But the proscribed terrorist group Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) has carried out similar attacks in the past to target migrant workers from other parts of the country.

The region’s deputy commissioner, Hazrat Wali Agha, said 17 miners were in the truck when the bomb went off.

A doctor at the local hospital said two of the wounded are in critical condition.

Mineral-rich Balochistan, which borders Iran and Afghanistan, has been the scene of a decade-old insurgency by separatist ethnic Baloch groups. Other terrorist groups are also operating in the area.

Indian PM Modi presents a tariff ‘offer’ during talks with Trump

Washington, USA – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to bring a “gift” for U.S. President Donald Trump during their meeting on Thursday, as he seeks to secure tariff concessions, new business deals, and closer cooperation on China. Modi hopes these gestures will strengthen ties and win favor with the U.S. president.

Trump, who is still within his first month in office, has used the threat of tariffs as leverage to extract new trade agreements, investments, and law enforcement assistance, targeting both allies and adversaries. Although Modi and Trump shared a cordial relationship during the former president’s first term, Trump has criticized India’s trade practices, famously calling the country a “very big abuser.” Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum have hit India particularly hard, raising expectations for a tough negotiation.

RELATED NEWS : PM Modi and President Macron Address 14th India-France CEOs Forum in Paris

Ahead of Thursday’s White House talks, Modi has prepared several offers, including increased purchases of liquefied natural gas, combat vehicles, and jet engines, according to unnamed Indian government officials. There are also potential agreements on U.S. agriculture exports to India and investment in nuclear energy. Modi’s delegation is exploring tariff reductions in various sectors, including electronics, medical equipment, and chemicals. Trump’s team believes these sectors need improvement from India.

“It’s a ‘gift’ for Trump,” said one source close to the discussions, previewing the private meeting. U.S. and Indian officials are also advancing talks on a bilateral trade deal, with hopes of reaching an agreement later this year. A senior Trump administration official outlined plans for a stronger defense partnership, including procurement and joint defense exercises. “On energy, we have the ability to literally power the Indian economy with U.S. energy sales, and the president believes both of those things can bring down the trade deficit.”

One sensitive issue that could surface is the case of billionaire Gautam Adani, whose company is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice for an alleged bribery scheme. Adani has denied any wrongdoing. Another potential complication is an alleged Indian intelligence plot to assassinate a Sikh activist in the U.S. during the previous administration. However, a U.S. official emphasized that President Trump prioritizes the safety of every American.

The tariff issue, however, is expected to take center stage. Richard Rossow, head of the India program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, predicts a challenging conversation. “It’s going to be a boxing match,” he said. “India is willing to take a few hits, but there’s a limit.” The U.S. currently faces a $45.6 billion trade deficit with India, and U.S. tariffs remain lower, with an average rate of 2.2%, compared to India’s 12%. Trump’s administration has made it clear that it will impose reciprocal tariffs on countries that impose duties on U.S. imports, escalating fears of a global trade conflict.

What Trump Wants

In addition to trade and defense matters, Trump is expected to seek more cooperation from India on addressing unauthorized immigration. India is a major source of both legal and illegal immigration to the U.S., particularly among tech workers on visas. The issue is a key concern for the Trump administration.

Modi is also expected to meet with billionaire Elon Musk during his Washington visit, according to two sources familiar with the plans. Musk, a prominent Trump ally, may discuss the potential for his Starlink company to enter the South Asian market.

India’s strategic position in the U.S. efforts to counter China is another key area of discussion. Many in the Trump administration view China as the primary U.S. rival. Modi shares concerns about China’s military expansion and competition in global markets. There is also fear within India that Trump might negotiate with China in a way that excludes India, according to Mukesh Aghi, president of the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum.

Despite the focus on bilateral relations, trade, defense, and immigration, the issue of China will likely be an underlying theme throughout the meeting, according to Lisa Curtis, a former White House official. “Even though much of the talk will be on the bilateral relationship, on trade, on immigration, defense purchases, the China thread will weave through the meeting,” she said.

While India has maintained its stance of “strategic ambiguity” in international conflicts, it continues its close ties with Russia, despite the ongoing war in Ukraine. India remains a significant consumer of Russian energy, even as Western nations reduce their consumption due to the conflict.

As Modi prepares for this high-stakes meeting, all eyes will be on how these complex issues—tariffs, defense, energy, and China—will shape the future of U.S.-India relations.

Russia releases imprisoned American Marc Fogel in what US calls a step toward the end of Ukraine war

Washington, USA — Marc Fogel, an American history teacher who was deemed wrongfully detained by Russia, has been released and returned to the U.S. in what the White House described as a diplomatic thaw that could advance negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

Steve Witkoff, a special envoy for President Donald Trump, left Russia with Fogel and brought him to the White House, where Trump greeted him.

RELATED NEWS : Latest – All Passengers Feared Dead After American Eagle Plane and Army Helicopter Collide in Washington, D.C.

“I feel like the luckiest man on Earth right now,” Fogel said as he stood next to Trump with an American flag draped around his shoulders.

Fogel, who is from Pennsylvania and was expected to be reunited with his family by the end of the day, said he would forever be indebted to Trump.

Trump said another American would be released on Wednesday, though he declined to name the person or say from what country, only saying it was someone “very special.”

The president declined to say if he spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin about Fogel, but Fogel praised the Russian leader as “very generous and statesmanlike in granting me a pardon.”

Asked about the terms of the deal, Trump said: “Very fair, very, very fair, very reasonable. Not like deals you’ve seen over the years. They were very fair.”

He did not say what the United States exchanged for Fogel’s release.

Fogel was arrested in August 2021 and was serving a 14-year prison sentence. His family and supporters said he had been traveling with medically prescribed marijuana, and he was designated by President Joe Biden’s administration as wrongfully detained in December.

Michael Waltz, Trump’s national security adviser, said the U.S. and Russia “negotiated an exchange” to ensure Fogel’s release. He did not say what the U.S. side of the bargain entailed. Previous negotiations have occasionally involved reciprocal releases of Russians by the U.S. or its allies.

Waltz said the development was “a sign we are moving in the right direction to end the brutal and terrible war in Ukraine.” Trump, a Republican, has promised to find a way to end the conflict.

Trump also has talked about having a good relationship with Putin, who launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Last month, Trump said his administration was having “very serious” conversations with Russia about the war.

Speaking to reporters at the White House earlier Tuesday, Trump said, “We were treated very nicely by Russia, actually. I hope that’s the beginning of a relationship where we can end that war.”

Asked whether the U.S. had given up anything in return, Trump replied “not much” but did not elaborate.

Fogel’s relatives said they were “beyond grateful, relieved and overwhelmed” that he was coming home.

“This has been the darkest and most painful period of our lives, but today, we begin to heal,” they said. “For the first time in years, our family can look forward to the future with hope.”

There was no immediate comment from Moscow about Fogel’s release on Tuesday.

The U.S., Russia and other nations carried out a large prisoner swap in August that resulted in the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and American corporate security executive Paul Whelan, among others.

This initiative follows the recently concluded India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), which positions EFTA as the first European bloc to formalize a trade pact with India.

Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, hailed TEPA as a landmark agreement, emphasizing India’s growing role in global trade.
