Extraction 2: Chris Hemsworth Welcomes Thor Co-Star to Franchise in New Clip

Hollywood(CDR)- Chris Hemsworth recently revealed that his Thor co-star Idris Elba has joined the cast of his upcoming Netflix action film, Extraction 2.

The actor shared the news by debuting a new clip from the hotly-anticipated sequel on Instagram. Elba’s unnamed character appears at the end of the scene, jokingly telling Hemsworth’s character, “Rake — that’s such a fun name to say.” Hemsworth captioned the social media post, “Good to have [Idris Elba] join the Extraction team,” with Elba commenting, “Yes brother. Extraction 2 let’s go!” At this time, it is unknown if Elba will be playing an adversary or ally of Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake.

Hemsworth and Elba previously worked together on Marvel Studios’ Thor franchise, appearing as the titular God of Thunder and Heimdall, respectively. They also acted opposite one another in two Avengers movies — Age of Ultron (2015) and Infinity War (2018). Elba is the latest addition to the Extraction franchise, joining a cast that includes Olga Kurylenko, Tinatin Dalakishvili, Andro Jafaridze, Daniel Bernhardt, Tornike Gogrichiani, Levan Saginashvili and George Lasha. Golshifteh Farahani and Adam Bessa are also back from the first film, reprising their roles as mercenaries Nik Khan and Yaz Khan, respectively.

Extraction 2 May Lead to a More Action-Focused Thor 5

While a fifth Thor film is far from confirmed, Hemsworth recently stated that he would love to see the Marvel Cinematic Universe incorporate some of the choreographed action sequences from the Extraction films. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’m not exaggerating. At the end of a take, you’re sucking air like you never have before, and everyone drops to their knees. But it’s so much more rewarding,” the actor said about filming Extraction’s extensive fight scenes. “I would love to take this style and integrate it into a Marvel film, if I was ever to do another one,” he added.

Extraction 2 is set nine months after the original 2020 film, following Australian mercenary Tyler Rake (Hemsworth) as he accepts his next high-stakes mission: rescuing the battered family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held. After helming the first film, Sam Hargrave returned as director with Joe and Anthony Russo also back as producers. Joe Russo also wrote the sequel’s screenplay. The first Extraction was a major success for Netflix, shattering viewership records to become the most-watched original film on the service at the time. It remains to be seen if the sequel will perform as well on Netflix. If it does, Hargrave and Hemsworth are willing and ready to get back in the saddle for Extraction 3.
